Hello,
a long time ago I read on Manfreds site that someone made a ring/collar to fit over a standard bearing to make it fit instead of the mega-expensive OEM -parts. Is it possible for me to buy such rings somwhere?
I'm contemplating tearing my TR1.-engine apart and change bearings, I suspect the main bearings to be faulty.

Yes it is possible to fit a collar to a common size bearing to replace the odd originals.
I'm looking at doing just that for my own motor - if I've got to set up to make 2 I can make more.

How much demand is there for these ? The very low NZ dollar against the euro would make them pretty good value
if I did a batch. I'd have to have them finish ground to very fine tolerances but I can have that done locally to me.

Would one of the German - speakers on this site like to put up a translation & we'll see what interest there is.

And yes I've done this before for bearings in Yamaha 4 - wheelers used on NZ farms - Yamaha can be very awkward with bearing sizes - I've thought for years a designer at Yamaha must have a relation who owns a bearing company!

Für die Krauts die garkein English können: ;-) Es geht darum, Adapterringe für die Kurbelwellenlager anzufertigen, so dass man Standardlager anstelle der teuren Yamaha-Lager, die keine Norm-Maße haben, verwenden kann. Greg könnte solche Ringe anfertigen, und er fragt ob da noch mehr Leute Interesse dran hätten. Müssten zwar aus Neuseeland verschickt werden, aber der Dollarkurs wäre gerade günstig.

Georg, Thanks for what I hope is a translation
I'm currently waiting for a price for 5 sets (10) and 10 sets (20) of rings from a friend who runs a CNC lathe shop.
Done on CNC machinery they can be made more accurately and hopefully cheaper.
I will post a price per set as soon as I have it - at the moment the NZdollar is worth about 46 cents Euro so you guys may get a bargain.

Der Neuseeland-Dollar kostet gerade 46 Euro-Cent, so dass wir evtl ein Schnäppchen machen könnten, aber ich glaube der Versand und die Überweisungskosten nach Neuseeland könnten evtl zu teuer sein. Weiss jemand, wie teuer die original-Lager sind?

Postage/freight  - a small airmail packet will not cost much from NZ - about $NZ5.00 to Europe
Payment/money transfer - my wife has a paypal a/c and I'm hoping we might be able to use this

I also would be interested to know what genuine Yamaha mains cost in Europe. Yamaha have several pricing "zones" around the world. About 8 years ago NZ and Australia were moved into the same zone as the USA and this dropped prices here about 5 per cent. I'd always heard Europe was the most expensive zone.

Okay Guys I've got the prices.
For a pair of bearing adaptors $NZ 70.00 plus postage to Europe $NZ12.00
The adaptors will be made from 4120 hollow bar on CNC equipment - so very good quality.

At this end of the world the bearing prices are - Yamaha original $NZ 182.80 ea   Common 6308 C3 $NZ 61.08 ea.
These are the prices I would pay here with my trade discounts & incl tax.
I do not want to supply bearings as I suspect the difference between the prices may be bigger in Europe.

At the moment the NZ dollar is trading around  .46 Euro. My wife says we can use her Paypal a/c so money transfer should not be a problem. I'm in no hurry to order a batch as my friend is very busy now but he will have time in 6 - 8 weeks.

Hi again guys,  I should perhaps have made it clear that these adaptors will enable you to fit readily available 6308 bearings which are 90 X 40 X 23  in place of the Yamaha originals which are 94 X 40 X 23.
This covers all TR1  920 - 980. All XV1000  and possibly the 750 and 1100 motors
Anyone with a 750 or 1100 should check with a Yamaha parts man whether they use the same main bearings.

Re the bearing prices here in NZ - I would expect the 6308 to be cheaper in Europe and the genuine Yamaha to possibly be more expensive. I'd like to know how many of these original bearings Yamaha have left world - wide ( there are 2 in Australia )
When they re - order theyr'e going to be much more expensive. Anyone got a contact in Amsterdam headquarters ?

Well, I've got 2 rings from Greg and they fit nicely! For the left side I bought a 6308 C4 (SKF)  bearing for 25 euro instead of the OEM for 190 euro so in changing both bearings I'll save 330 euro minus the prize of the adaptors. :)
