Title: Rebuilt Engine Start UP
Post by gerryg on 26.03.10 at 18:28:13

Hi.
Not been on for a while, been busy rebuilding my bike. I will post some images when its painted etc.
I have two problems.
The first is the usual slipping starter clutch.  I have fitted the latest 4 pole starter motor, but the clutch is slipping as it hits each compression. Where's the best source for one. Part number 5A8 155 700 or is there a better one?
The other is the front cylinder is running too hot. I have cleaned and rebuilt the carbs. but not checked the float chamber fuel levels yet. Is there anything else I should look for?
I would appreciate any words of wisdom as this is now delaying  riding the bike.
Thanks
Gerry

Hi. I have reset the fuel levels, they were too low. Much better but still too lean. Does anyone have any suggested jet sizes for a straight though exhaust with K&N Filters?. One of the UK Yamaha dealers has offered a Starter Sprag Clutch for £235 is that OK?

I have a stupid (?) question: is there any other way to check the fuel level than with the carburators mounted to the engine? I find it terribly cumbersome to take them out, do some adjustment, put them back in (^#*%$!!), check, and having to get them back out because it still wasn't right...  ;D ;D

How did you do the fuel level adjustment?

Thanks

Holger

Hi
The easier way to check and reset the fuel levels is to note the angular positions of the carbs on the bike, make a wooden block to hold them on the bench in that position. Then you can fit the plastic pipes and use a bottle of fuel to see the levels.

That's the easy bit. Back to my ongoing starter clutch saga. I bought a new starter clutch 5A8-15570-00. I was told by Yamaha there was no improved part number for a TR1. The supplied part has 19 teeth, the old one has 18, so it obviously does not fit!

My idler gear has 36 teeth but I saw a picture of a Virago one with 35 teeth. Does that go with 19 tooth clutch? but surely this gears the starter up and must give the clutch harder work.
Have they put the part in wrong box?
Will I be able to get an 18 tooth clutch?
If not does anyone have a 35 tooth idler gear for sale?
Your wisdom would be appreciated.
Gerry

I think I have found the answer to my starter sprag clutch problems and hope this will help others.
Later Virago's had much better starting. I am told that the  introduction of a four pole starter motor plus the following lower geared Sprag Clutch changes helped.
The TR1 Sprag Clutch has 19 teeth (5A8 15570 00 00) This goes with a 35 tooth Ider Gear.
After 1986 a mod was made for easier cold starts.
A Sprag Clutch with teeth reduced to 18 (3LP 15570 00 00) and Idler Gear teeth increased to 36.
These parts must be used in sets. An expensive conversion but 2nd hand parts from scrap yards for later Virago's
are a lot cheaper.

I have opened the case on my old sprag clutch and all that was wrong was that a roller spring had tangled with the main shaft and become bent.
I have straightened the spring, reassemble the case and it works well. So I will now TIG weld the case and keep it as a spare.
I will let you know if the Virago parts are worth fitting in a few weeks time when the bike is back on the road.
