Title: Chain removal
Post by kdemery on 26.02.12 at 18:41:22

Hello

The query is, how do I remove the chain? The manual says remove the 'soft link'. I have looked and can't find a link that looks any different to the others. So, how do I identify the soft link?

Thank you
Kevin

Hello,

if there is a soft link, You should be able to find it, looking from the left side. It looks very much different. Not the link itself, but the clip that holds the whole thing together.
What I suppose is, that someone used a chain without a soft link. There are two kinds of these chains: Endless ones and such with bolts, that get riveted. For the TR1, many people prefer to rivet the chains, because they are afraid that the clip of a soft link may cause problems inside the rubber part of the chain case. You can identify the riveted bolts by looking very close. Faster bikes are not allowed to have soft links at all.
In such cases You have to use an angle grinder to cut the chain.

Kind regards,
Stefan

I found the answer.  :)

When I removed the front cog cover I had a better view of the chain. That allowed me to get a cloth to it and clean it up a bit.

The soft link has slightly different coloured pins. They appear to be a copper colour. I used a pin removing tool to push the pins through and removed the clip.

Putting the chain back on was just a case of replacing the link and burring over the end of the pins.
