Title: Newbie questions
Post by cliffa on 23.06.13 at 10:24:58

Hello all, cliffa (newbie) here. I purchased a Yamaha TR1 this week. I have always liked them, and saw this for a very good price. It needs a few jobs doing though, and I wonder if the group can advise please?

Brake discs need replacing. Do the discs from other Yamaha models fit? ( XS750 look the same) and where can they be obtained?
Brake pads, can you advise which are the best?
Brake calipers need overhauling, as they are sticking. Does anybody make stainless pistons for them?
Is there an easy ( and discreet ) way to improve the brakes ? (I.e. different master cylinder)
And lastly tyres, what are the best for this model?

Any other advise gladly accepted!

Many thanks in advance!

Cliffa

Hi Cliffa,

welcome to the Forum. I cannot respond to everything you ask, here you have to rely on others, but I suggest they will also answer soon.

Brake disk from XJ650 will fit. To my knowledge the complete front brake System is the same as on TR1.
Improving the Brakes; master cylinder from XJ600 Diversion in conjunction with a steel brake line kit improves braking enormous.

Tyres: wouldn't say they are the best, but Bridgestone BT45 are very good.

Kind regards

Juergen

OI Cliffa,

as said before:

brake disks: XS350/360/400/650/750/850, XJ650/750 and various other models use the smaller 267mm disks
pads: as you're in the UK, get some nice EBC sinter pads (HH I think is the code for the nice ones)
other upgrades: any 14mm brake master cylinder will do, Diversion 600 is a straight swap, a nice set of Goodridge hose can't do you harm either (but get one, where you can junk the distributor, will make bleeding a lot easier)
stainless brake pistons are available via ebay-germany: http://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050890.m570.l1313.TR8.TRC2.A0.Xbremskolben+tr1&_nkw=bremskolben+tr1&_sacat=0&_from=R40

But I think WEMOTO has them in stock as well. (well worth it... I have been running stainless brake pistons for about a decade in my TR1 and can't say anything negative about 'em)

Tyres: mostly black, relatively round... no seriously the aforementioned BT45 are very good - there's some alternatives coming up these days AVON and Conti being the first that spring to my mind. Haven't run them on the TR1 though...

Cheers,
Greg

Thank you both very much for the info, especially regarding the tyres. I bought some once that were not round, and had a hard time getting inner tubes that would fit  ;)

Regards, Cliff

Hi me again, I have another small question, can the BT45's be run tubeless on the standard TR1 wheels? As I noticed on the microfiches that inner tubes are shown. I really hope the answer is yes, as I don't like tubes.

Regards & freundliche grüsse,
Cliffa

Hi,

No. You got to use the tube with the BT45.
As far as I know, there are no tubeless tyres for the standard TR1 wheels.

Cheers,

Stefan

Thank you Stefan, that's a real shame though.

Hallo Cliff,
The original wheels are constructionally not suitable for tubeless tires!

Thank you for the replies. Do any other wheels (maybe diversion 900) fit which would allow tubeless running?

Cliff

Nope. Nothing that wouldn't involve serious adaptations.

What's so bad about tubes ? At least you can fix them, when you have a flat unlike tubeless tyres...

As far as i know the Usa-version of the XJ650 had tubeless tyres. Perhaps the XV 920 or other derivates of the TR1 that where sold in Usa or Canada have them also?

Possibly the same that is so bad about the original ignition coils... ;-) If Yamaha had fitted the TR1 with tubeless tyres and sparkplug-connector-ignitioncoils, there would surely be someone who replaced them with tube-tyres and common ignitioncoils.

Exactly.

Hi all, It's a personal thing. Tubes deflate very quickly when punctured, ( obviously not ideal) whereas a punctured tubeless tyre will often get you home if you take it easy.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies.

Cliff.
