Hi, I'm open to suggestions on what to do next! TR1 - 1981, all standard.

The problem: Over 4-4500 rpm the  motor just seems to run out of power and it takes a looooong time to get to 5-6000.
The carbs have been on and off so many times I can do it blindfold... The carbs have been in the in the ultrasound cleaner and new float needles fitted. Float levels checked/adjusted. New plugs and HT leads and a new air filter. Still the same >:(

I have the luxury of a friend with several running TR1's ;)  So far we have change the complete carburettor assembly, the coils with leads and caps, the TCI unit, the fuel tank in case it was bad taps, from a good running bike... the carbs were not adjusted for this engine though.
A road test was done after each part was swapped (added). We also tried a run without the air filter. That just made it worse.
I had removed the carb vacuum unit, but reinstated it. No difference.

What have I/we missed?????

Hi John, of course i do not know what you ´ve missed, but the first thing i would look after- because its simple- is the timing Gear. Rear  on TDC- 285 Degree clockwise- Front on TDC, the TR runs with both-285 Degree and 75 Degree , the "lost" spark makes that possible, but with 75 Degree it runs like a "Big Bang" engine,

Hi Ali, that's 2 of us ;)

We "think" the engine ran good before and have done nothing except put a new starter on it...  it was the starter clutch that was failing :-/
Then gave it service items - oil, plugs, oil and air filters.

It feels like it is short of fuel, but the carb set from Herbert's bike runs good on his bike. Float levels are OK.

Check the timing marks with utmost scrutiny... It might actually be clever to pop off the right cover and check the timing marks directly on the gears and not only on the flywheel. If you don't find anything, you may even want to go one step further and pop the alternator-rotor off the crank as there's a mark on the gear behind it. (There's a whole in the rotor, so you can check the mark through it and if you're lucky (and have a good torch) you may be able to see the marks on the crankshaft and idler gear...

The dots have to match, when the camshaft's pin faces 12 o'clock (the little nose in the head).

Hope this helps. It's a tedious process, but assuming you've checked everything else, this is most likely it.

Hi John,
i didn´t realized its you, John is a common name. The hint on Herbert makes me think.
If the bike ran good before, it may not be the timing, even so its a good idea to have a look at that.
You wrote, the carbs worked good with Herberts bike, so what is left? Petcocks, the vacuum thing? Surely you you have  tried to go on PRI?
Maybe some electrical desaster? On Ulis bike i improvised by putting 2 wires directly from battery to the coils (+) , he said in runs better than,
i know some people saying that bad contacts can cause  poor performance at higher revs,

I pent a few hours today putting all the bits back on Herberts bike and then re-assembling mine.
Plus, I checked the valve timing - OK, and re-adjusted the tappets - one was a little tight(#1 Ex) and the rest were on the slack side.
Road tested after everything put back together and it now pulls good to the top of the rev rang, through 1st, 2nd and third... The ran out of road.

I have to assume you are correct with some electrical contact not being very good and the unplugging and re-plugging has cleaned the contacts of some vital part. I will follow that up when I have a bit more time... the roof of my new house arrives tomorrow [smiley=funny_2.gif]
