Title: Athena valve oil seal Post by Broodjesalami on 28.11.15 at 17:54:26
Hi I've bought an ATHENA gasket set for my 1983 XV1000(5A8). And the valve oil seals are lose. I can slide them on and off without a problem. Is this a known problem? Link to buy seals that fit? And the metal head gasket are to thick. :-/ I know this link http://www.tr1.de/pages/misc_shop.php I this the only solution? You cant recycle them? |

The oil seals coming with the Athena set have a poor quality. I don´t use them anymore, some are OK and it works fine for a while, some are cracked in the moment you install them. Origins from Yamaha are not too expensive. Quote:
I do not know if this is the only solution, but the gaskets from Sepp are easy to install (not too much torque needed) , they are tight and also not expensive, Regards Ali |

I have been running Viton valve stem seals on my TR1s (and other bikes) with great success, I normally buy them via ebay.com from a seller named SMW70 in the U.S. ! Way better quality and the first ones, which I ever fitted (on my XT500 engine) were still soft after six years and sealing as good as when new. Cheers, Greg |

Is sepp sold out? Home made gaskets interesting. Did you make a full surface head gasket? Or just an O-ring style? |

I glab er hods ned dawardn keena.............Translation: i believe, he cannot wait about them. But we stay in holiday for 10 days. the gaskets lie in the package for two weeks, now they are back in the box, means, we have about twenty pieces in stock. In copper you get many different problems! the copper ring works into the aloy from the head, the heat between the cylinder and the head is interruppted, if you have a distance between head and cylinder and so on. As expected the metal head gasket are not available from yamaha. Buth unexpected was the price of the valve oil seals 31.64 euro for 4 in the local dealer. :( Are those normal prices? Sepp you will be getting an email for the head gasket. |

??? I got fresh valve oil seals from yamaha and they fit like athena seals. [smiley=bad_4.gif] They move up and down with the valve?? The old ones fitted tight and didnt move up and down. [smiley=confused_1.gif] Are they meant to move? did they change the design? Do I need a special tool to clamp them down?? |

The correct yamaha number is: 341 - 12119 -02 S. |

Normaly you must tighten the Valve seal "without" Oil on in, on the valve-support, and then it will be ok. You must have a little bit counterforce, when you put in on the valve-support. In the valve-support is a natch, wich will hold the valve-oil-seal. the valve-oil-seal will be the same, on all XV Engines! form 700-1100 ccm! when you put in the valve, give same oil on it.... greeting from the Eifel Klaus |

What a question...... ;) The valve on the left looks like your problem! The valve-oil-seal must be placed correctly on the valve-support |

:'( I've found out why the seals didnt fit. I dissasembeld my 2nd parts motorcycle and found it looked differently. The place where my seal fit was machined. I'll upload foto's later. Is costum seals an option? |

Title: Re: Athena valve oil seal Post by Ali on 06.12.15 at 21:44:35
The valve guides shown on your picture are not the origin guides, and they don´t look good , you can replace them, but that´s not cheap, and you better ask someone who knows how to do this job correctly. 4 original guides are about 200 Euro, i presume. Sorry for not having better news, Ali |
Title: Re: Athena valve oil seal Post by Broodjesalami on 06.12.15 at 22:42:38
There seem to be some valve guide liner installed. They look good to me and there is no play in the valve. But for some reason I dont know why, they machined the outside to fit different seals. So I need seals for an 8mm valve stem that fit on a 12mm (diameter) valve guide. Also, is there a way to identify cilinder heads? (Y-5, Y-3, Y-1 marking on top) |
Title: Re: Athena valve oil seal Post by nanno on 07.12.15 at 07:56:07
Judging by how they machined the outside of the cylinderhead, they probably wanted to fit valve-stem-seals from some sort of car. If you still have the old ones, I'd go to a car shop and show them to a mechanic and hope for the best. Otherwise: As Ali said, you'd have to get some new valve guides. Stock Yamaha stuff is expensive, but if you look around a bit on ebay or buy them directly via one of the Yamaha parts wholesalers in the states they maybe can be had for less. And you may want to search the net with the original spare parts number for the 1st o/s valve guide: 4X7-11133-10-00 Which will hopefully help you in finding some better results. Cheers, Greg |

Yep, car seals where fitted because they are way cheaper. 10 for 20 euro ;D Back on my way assembling :) Does annyone know how to spot the differents between an XV750, XV920, TR1 cilinderhead? (Y-5, Y-3, Y-1 markings?) |
Title: Re: Athena valve oil seal Post by nanno on 07.12.15 at 19:29:04
Valve and combustion chamber sizes (750 vs 920/TR1) differ quite a bit. 750 valves and combustion chamber are a lot smaller. I don't think the casting marks mean anything really. Cheers, Greg |
