I am building a custom tr1 83 in the uk

Wiring isn't my strong point, I'm I'm currently trying to tidy up and modify the wiring along with starting the bike.

I have a problem with the starter solenoid, I am now on my second one from America because I thought the first one was duff.

could you answer this please.....should there be continuity as in the picture. Because when wired up the hook doesn't pull in, but it will hold its self in if you push it by hand. There is also a small spark when touching the 12v to the solenoid switch. After a while it gets warm too.

I'm on my own with this so I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could help me figure out how to wire it up.

If you push the hook in, you should have continuity. If you dab the small 6.3mm spade connector with a 12V live, it should pull the hook in. You have to have ground on the case of the solenoid too. (I'd suggest one of the mounting rods!)

If it doesn't pull the hook in that case, it's f*cked.

Hey, yeah with the hook pushed in I get continuity between the two main posts.

Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I can't believe both brand new solenoids are fked! Ah man

 Hi Dave!

At first you must show that the "GROUND" from the Batterie is correct connected with the engine!!!!!
All problems with the electric starting with a bad ground.
Normaly is ab very small ground-cable on one bolt on the engine.
At all my machines i have put a big one directly zu the bolts on the starter.
i think, when you have the ground contact good placed, the solenoid will works fine......

Have you followed the procedure, I outlined in the previous post? If so and it didn't do anything then yes, they're both fried. If not, please follow the steps as outlined and try again.

Try this:
connect the short wire (big diameter) from the solenoid to the starter-engine, and do a test.
Maybe it works.  I can`t explain why, but all my solenoids only work correctly when all wires are mounted. Maybe it has something to do with the magnetic field?

In the picture does not appear the hub to which the solenoid magnetizing current becomes.

Nanno yes I did what you said on the bench and still no success

BUT! It now works.....

I think basically the problem was the hook wasn't preloaded, when you bolt it to the engine, it pushed the hook in about 3-4mm so when fired it pulls in a treat, just on the bench it didn't have enough magnetic pull to pull the hook in from its "all the way out" resting position.

Hope that makes sense

My next problem is the starter still isn't engaging with the flywheel (or bike equivalent) so I'll do some searching to try find the problem

is the plunger bolted onto the rocker (on the outer cover). Otherwise the solenoid won't do much...

Hi alfiegobb where in the UK are you?
I ended up with two problems, first was the inner idler gear was actually missing from my bike. Once I'd bought and fit that I then found the spragg clutch was slipping so wouldn't turn the engine over. 60 quid later and the bike turned over and after hooking a temp tank up the engine fired into life!! Hurrah
