Title: Steering head bearings
Post by JaseG on 28.10.18 at 16:31:36

Thought I'd add a note about steering head bearings that might be of use to another newbie like me.  I recently tried fitting some Pyramid Part tapered bearings (off ebay) to replace the original ball bearing setup, and although they’re advertised as a direct replacement for the TR1 (81 through 88) they’re not a good fit.  Both races were too wide and the bottom race fits flush with the inner tube leaving no purchase for later removal – I had to weld on some blobs to knock it out.  I think I’ll stick with the balls…. If it ain't broke don’t fix it… so they say.

Well, or simply don't believe the seller.  ;)

He/She sold you the bearings for a later XV1000, which are slightly different. Make sure you actually buy the correct tapered roller bearings for a TR1 and you're golden. (Had the same issue a few years ago, when I did the swap!)

Cheers,
Greg
