Title: Head gasket - best brand?
Post by Keith_Bennett on 30.07.19 at 19:13:11

Hi all. With just over two weeks to go before the Pitton rally, I've hit a snag. Today I rode my TR1 for the first time in over five years (hooray!). Unfortunately upon my return, I've discovered that the front head gasket is blowing (boo!).
Can anyone recommend the best manufacturer and type of gasket? So far I've seen Athena ,MS, genuine Yamaha... Also, what else am I going to need for this job? I'm running out of time...

Hello Keith

I would try to tighten the cylinder head bolts. That may give you a temporary fix.

Sepp manufactures cylinder head gaskets but you need to remove the head and measure the gap first. You don't have time to do that.

You will need to remove the engine to get to the head. It's not a simple job. You will need a head gasket, a cam chain rubber gasket (it sits adjacent to the head gasket) and you will need exhaust gaskets as the exhausts need to be removed to get to the engine.

I have either bought individual gaskets from Yambits or gasket sets from eBay. Athena is one of the brands I have used satisfactorily.

Let me go check my box of bits and see what I have.

I hope to see you at the Rally.

Regards
Kevin

Hello Keith

You are a very lucky person. I just checked my box of bits and I have the four gaskets you need.

x1 Head gasket
x1 Cam chain gasket
x2 Exhaust gaskets

Please send a PM or email (kdemery@btinternet.com) to me with your postal address and I will send them off to you.

Regards
Kevin

I was having problems finding a cam chain tunnel seal/o ring. No-one seems to sell them separately. So thank you, Mr Emery.
