Hello to one and all , i have a sick TR1 at present ..... the starter motor broke so have ordered a new item from america , while waiting , i have been youtubing fixes for the strange grunching noises emanating from engine upon starting and a few clips show the large spring being deleted from bendix drive / idler gear shaft / setup .          Does anyone here have definate ideas about doing this ..... or is this a bad idea and something thats been discussed here many times before

My bike is an very early 920

G'mornin'... yup this has been discussed a few times on here. But in your defense, it's been done in German. ;)
Yes the spring can be omitted and yes a new starter (and a good battery) are always a good starting point with these old girls. I hope you ordered a 4-brush starter (these aren't just available with the long-shaft for the big-boy models, but also for the 750).

That being said, where are you located? (Starters are also available from Germany for example...)

Thanks greg , i am new here and still on training wheels , i am in australia and after reading your reply , am now worried i might have ordered a 2 brush starter not realising there was a difference .      My old one is a 4 brush and as i have only damaged the drive end , i can hopefully mix and match to fix the problem

Hello Woodsey

The starter assembly for the TR1 and 920 are significantly different. Changing the starter motor on a TR1 to four pole makes a significant difference to its function. But on the 920 its the starter bendix that limits the functionality. There are minor changes you can make by removing springs and I believe by fitting a stronger spring but in the end it's limited by the bendix.

You can change to a four pole motor but don't expect too much. It will still be rubbish and noisy. It's an inherent design issue.

Update on starter motor ........... I have recieved the new starter from america last night and fitted it this morning , i made doubly sure i earthed it well and assembled everything as should be but left out the spring on the clutch / bendix drive as per recommended on forums

Filled it with oil and hit the starter button and whammo , it started like it has never started before , no metalic crunching noises , nothing

Very , very happy and relieved

Sorry to be dragging this starter motor issue out , but while i was inside the motor messing around with the recent starter motor problem , i noticed the oil pump chain was quiet slack / loose .

I tried adjusting it with the metallic guard but no luck , i am talking about 20-25mm movement on the forward section of the chain

What is acceptable and how do i fix this please

They are always loose. Every oil pump on every TR1 I have owned has been like that.

Tension it as much as you can, that is all you can do.

They still work well like that.

Unless Greg says something different!!

Now, now now... where would be the fun in that be?  ;)

And yes, I agree with Kevin, the chain is always a bit slack... doesn't matter.
