Title: Single Cylinder TR1 Post by shalesy on 15.06.20 at 10:33:08
Moin Boys and Girls, I have re-entered the world of the TR1 after the last TR1 self destructed its motor. I bought this bike a couple of months ago and at that time it ran OK. There were a few problems to sort out but nothing major. After the first ride it was obvious it needed new steering bearings. Did that. It had been reluctant to fire up the front cylinder, but it always chimed in after a sort while. Now its almost a Dodo. So far I have: Cleaned the carbs and fitted new needle & jet kits to both (in the right order :) ) Diaphragm appear to be AOK. No holes /tear's Checked and set the float height's - I had the idea the front level was too high. Checked the pri/sec ohm values of the coils and swapped them between cylinders. Fitted new the HT leads / caps New spark plugs. Sworn at it and beaten it with a stick. All to no avail, in fact it seams worse :-X and the new plug on the front cylinder is almost as shiny as when I put it in, but wet. Whats left? The TCI? The sparks on the front plug do seem a little dim, but maybe I'm clutching at straws... Help me! I'm lost with my TR1 ;D |

If even that does not help, there is no more chance... ;-) In principal you have checked and replaced all parts except the TCI and the pickups, so try these if possible. |

Much as I though to be honest :-[ Herbert is looking for a TCI that I can try as the next step [smiley=funny_4.gif] Thanks. |

One thing I am missing in your list (especially as you swapped the HT-leads already) have you tried swapping the coils around, i.e. running the rear cylinder with what originally was the front coil and vice versa? Also have you done a compression check on the cylinder that is not working? |

Hi Nanno, yup, swapped the coils. Both read 2.8 / 8.6 ohm. Compression test this evening... when I find my tester ::) |

Couldn't wait... Its not easy, pushing the tester in the hole and cranking with a wide open throttle. Anyway they are both the same (within a little bit), at 135 psi / 9.5 kg/cm2 That OK? |

Perfectly fine. I was hoping to find one of them being really far off as you have with like a bent valve or so... :(

Hi John, i heard from Herbert you decided to try TR 1 again, in my opinion: a good decision. I can´t help from a far, but i am sure you will solve that problem you have. Got a picture of that destructed motor , the one from your last TR. Herbert delivered a set of bits and pieces to northern Germany, new crank, new bearings, oilpump and a lot more was necessary to built up something i can call a motor. No tests has been done until now, because of corona. But i hope it will work fine for many Kilometers or maybe miles, Ali |

Good to see that it has been revived. Herbert did show me the mess that was inside it. I still think it was the petcock pissing petrol into the oil that caused the problem. Herbert has also sent me parts and a TCI is on its way [smiley=cool_3.gif] I think we will have to call Herbert "The Quatermaster". (Not sure Quartiermeister has the same meaning :) ) Cheers, John |

I saw the heading and thought someone was converting a bunch of their spares into a single cylinder TR1 on purpose! ;D Crazy idea, right? [smiley=smiley_22.gif] [smiley=confused_1.gif] [smiley=cool_2.gif] |

Having swapped TCI's and getting the same result, it HAD to be the carb. Off they came again. Well, this is embarrassing! A user error happened [smiley=cool_4.gif] On the front cylinder, I stuck the main jet in the pilot [smiley=smiley_24.gif] All running good again [smiley=beer_2.gif] |

No worries - pretty much everyone of us (who has wrenched on the carbs in the past) has done that on the Hitachis. ;D
