Title: Cylinder head gasket
Post by Roubite on 27.10.20 at 20:16:53

Hello everyone,
I am French and I am going to rebuilt a tr1 of 83.

I have a problem with the cylinder head gasket ...
it is 2.5mm thick and the cylinder throat depth is only 2mm.

So when I torque the cylinder head, there is still a gap between the cylinder head and cylinder, which is not good at all !!

have you ever had this? what to do?

I have the right part though. 5A8-11181-00.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Roubite

I have never removed and remounted the heads of my TR1., but i believe i have heard that you just must use more torque.

If you have  After-Market Gaskets such as Athena for Example, even doubling the torque will not help. The Stud can brake, or you ruin the crankcase, or the head will warp, not good.
What i never tried:
maybe it is possible to press the gasket before mounting  down to two millimeters somehow.
Original Gaskets are no longer available, you can try used ones, if they look OK.
I did that , it is still working without problems.
Or try to get some Yamaha-originals, maybe some Dealers still have some of those,
Ali

I don’t know how helpful this will be but I think it’s worth mentioning.  I was watching Steve’s DIYs’ channel on Youtube the other day.  He’s uploaded a series of XV750 rebuild videos and someone posted a question about the gaskets he uses.  He replied that he now uses NE gaskets, he stated that he’d bought others in the past but had found that the head gaskets had been too thick.

Hi All, I managed to source a couple of original Yamaha cylinder head gaskets off ebay and thought I’d report back as I’ve now compared them with the Athena gaskets I bought previously.  The Yamaha gaskets measure 2.45mm whilst the Athena measure 2.55mm.  The Athena gaskets are noticeably heavier and weigh in at 15g whilst the Yamaha gaskets weigh approx. 12g.  The lighter alloy used to make the Yamaha gaskets appears to me to be more easily squashed, although I've not put them on yet.  The old squashed gasket measures 2.0mm.

This problem is probably due to a combination of gasket thickness and material type.
