Hi Sasa, hi all,

Sasa, first of all, welcome to the forum. Concerning the [e 4] number on your BSM exhaust, that number should help you to get your bike accepted by the authorities and technical inspectors in Croatia.

Generally spoken, all those e-numbers shall help the european citizens and the technical inspection companies to get around without any individual paper documents. Therefore, the manufacturers of aftermarket parts present their products to the national authorites. (In Germany, for example, it's the Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA), which is the federal motor transport authority of Germany. I suppose that you have a similar authority in Croatia.)

The authority then checks the products. And in case of a successful check, the products get an e-number. This number serves as as sufficient proof of the fact that the product has been checked by the authority. This means that all the checking and documentation process has been done centrally. Therefore, you as an individual citizen will not have to show any paper documents to your technical inspector. (He should be able to check the e-number by the help of his computer.)

Now an additional info about the two symbols "e in circle" versus "e in rectangular frame".
  • "e in circle" means that the checking and permission process has been done directly based on european laws.
  • "e in rectangular frame" means that the checking and permission process has been done based on national laws. In Germany for example, we have the national laws "Strassenverkehrsordnung (StVO)" and "Strassenverkehrs-Zulassungsordnung (StVZO)". But as the european idea is to harmonize the national and european laws, the national permission (proofed by the symbol "e in rectangular frame") will (at least in Germany) be accepted as equal to a european permission.

Therefore, I am optimistic that the croatian authorities, too will accept the rectangular e-symbol as sufficient.

Now what I found out about BSM. Located in the Netherlands, in those days, they were a producer of motorcycle exhaust systems. Their former address was:

BSM Exhausts B.V.
Burg Langmanweg 4
7021 BK Zelhem
The Netherlands
http://www.bsm-exhausts.com

In former times you could get some paper documents from BSM (also separately, as a customer service, after paying a certain fee). But now, the production has been discontinued. And it seems that the company doesn't exist anymore. By the way, the number 4 in the [e 4] symbol stands for the Netherlands as the home location of the manufacturer BSM.

Long story short: It should be sufficient to have the [e 4] number on the exhaust itself. Based on european laws, it should be possible for the technical inspectors in Croatia to find some kind of permission registration in their computers. Therefore, a separate paper document should not be neccessary for you to get the exhaust accepted.

All the best for you - and good luck at your technical inspection.

Roland

Dear Roland,

thank you very much for the detailed answer.
Unfortunately, the bureaucracy in Croatia is still in a socialist way of thinking, so without concrete paper and of course a stamp, they don't accept anything :(

That's why I need any document from BSM (btw I tried to contact them but no answer, I think they are no longer working).
I will "adapt" it to my exhaust :)

Greeting,
Sasa
