Title: Losing Gas...
Post by Henning Hogrefe(Guest) on 12.09.99 at 22:20:00

Hello!
While all of you having fun on the TR1-Meeting i was repairing
my bike...the newest Malfuncture is: she is losing gas! During 1
night up to 3 liters. I have allready changed the gas tubes, no
effect. I´ve tried out something: Last night i removed the gas
tubes and pressur tubes, at the morning there was no gas gone!
Can it be that much of the gas is getting lost during the
carburators???
Haven´t had this effect before, it´s new since 1 week now.
Any idea what it can be?
Thanks,
Henning

Auf Deutsch:
Hallo zusammen,
Vielen Dank,
Henning

Hi Henning!
I think that 3 litres should be traceable, it must be pouring all over.
I fixed my leak in replacing the gaskets and seals inside both fuel valve/ selectors left and right side of the tank.
The Gasket set from Louis fits well.
Regards, Klaus

Hi Klaus,
thanks for your answer
I´ve allready repleaced the gaskets and seals with the Louis-Kit. And
If i remove my gas tubes nothing gets lost. The leak MUST be
inside the Carburators (but where?), there is no other place possible.
So i have to remove them to fix them - again, last Home Improvement
is only 3-4 month ago.
O dear, sometimes i´m wondering why don´t i drive one of those new,
easy-to-handle Motorcycles. *lol*

Hi henning!
you wrote

if the engine stops and the suction pressure diminishes, the fuel valve closes.
so your carburetors are not faulty if you lose gas overnight, but first of all the fuel valve. check that again please.
if you suck at the small tube, the fuel flows out the larger one.
"The leak MUST be inside the Carburators (but where?), there is no other place possible."
if this were the case, then the valve that is closed by the fuel floats inside the foat chambers is the nuisance.
the valve seats are probably worn, so echange tose first and check that they clos properly by blowing through the fuel pipe and lifting the float body.
the valve must close then..
NOTE: the level at which total closure is obtained is shown on the technical pages..

P.S. maybe you lose fuel overnight because you go riding in your sleep?
(I've heard of sleepwalkers but this is ridiculous)

Hello, I had a similar problem with my TR! in Cape Town, eventually caused a blown crankshaft! Fuel was leaking straight through the carburettor into the crankcase. Don't ask me HOW, but when starting the bike fuel would drip out between the exhaust header/tailpipe joint.
Please be very careful. I think it was because of a faulty petrol-tap seal. It didn't happen when I disconnected the fuel pipes from the fuel tank. One day I forgot about the problem and went for a ride.... motor=kaput! Now I have a lonely, broken TR1 waiting for me when I go back to Cape Town!

Mitch
