Hi All,
I have an '81 XV920RH with 22,000 mi. that I bough new in the crate in '85 for $2100 and have let sit for the past 8 yrs. I am resurrecting this, and have been able to jet some 38mm mikuni's with 240 rear mains and 230 fronts with good running the result. Has anyone else had any experience with using mikuni's on this bike? I had to change the intake boots, and found some polaris 38mm boots that were 5/8" longer than the stockers, and I had to put K&N airfilters with the 30 degree offset boot on them, but it looks rad with one pointed diagonal rear and front! It might be well to just get 40mm mikuni's and use your stock boots and airbox, but such is not the case ....i got 38's!

Hi Charlie, this sounds interesting.  Do you happen to have the item number or dimensions for the K&Ns?  Do your rubber intakes have vaccum hook-ups, or how do you get the vacuum to the pet cock? Any pictures??
Thanks,

Thorsten, I used carb flanges (38mm) off of a Polaris snomobile, and the K&N's have a 30degree boot offset in them. I don't have vacuum lines to the petcocks, but the prime setting works just fine!
The carb flanges were the problem, as they were 5/8" longer, and the stock airbox 90's won't fit. If i had it to do over, i would just get 40mm Mikuni's and jet then down to 250 in the front and 260/270 in the rear. I could have used my stock boots that way, and I think the engine could handle the 40mm Mikuni's.
Hope this helps! I just blew the front headgasket 2 days ago, so I am in for repair right now Sad

Sounds like a great swap.I have thought about it before but what I did instead was put a K&N filter and 2 into 1 pipe on. I then drilled the main jets..first time all I had was a 1/16 bit and it worked out fine ..power was up and I still got 48-50mpg. This year I got some numbered drill bits and will attempt to fine tune the jetting.
I am running a Hannigan sport fairing with the lowers and a set of Krauser bags..a very European sport touring package. This is my third XV920RH and I sure like it.

Hi,
I have finally got my head gasket on the front cyl. changed, and the '81 XV920 RH is running like a champ, with 210 front jet and 220 rear jet for the 38mm Mikuni carbs from Sudco, and 5/8" longer-than-stock polaris boots, with the 30 degree-offset K & N filters on each side!
Loads of low and midrange, and a decent top end, also! I am currently running the wire wheels off an XS 650 special,('82) and the 16" rear stiffened up my gearing,(top speed is 102mph at redline) so it is a special made 630 sprocket next, with 32 teeth, to tall-up my gearing. Yoou can get one made from sprocket specialists for $51.95, I believe! Anyway, it really likes the Mikuni's!
