1981 TR1 Head Gasket part No 5A8-11181-00
05.04.17 at 02:01:18

Hi
a newbie here so apologies if i am not doing this right.

I have TR1 streetfighted being being done but we can find any NOS head gaskets part no 5A8-11181-00.  We have ordered some Athena gaskets but they do not fit they are too tall. I also contacted Sep Koch as I believe he had some gaskets made but have had no replies from him. So can anyone let me know where I can purchase either genuine yamaha gaskets or a aftermarket gasket that will fit. If we don't find any solutions I am considering milling a grove in the head so the Athena gaskets will fit. The grove in the cylinder liner is 1.8mm deep and the Athena gaskets too high so if i mill a groove in the head they will fit but I only want to consider this as a last resort. Here are a few pictures of the build.
Thanks

Do you mean that the Athena gasket is too thick? so the shape is correct but it sits high? sounds strange

Originally there were 3 or 4 different thicknesses for the headgasket, which also means, if you want to do it properly you have to go through the quite elaborate process of measuring the precise depth of your gasket groove and then decide, which gasket you actually need.

@Knobby
Sepp will get back to you, but he's a mighty busy man so it may eventually take a few days.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi yes the gasket is too thick and we can't torque the head down correctly.

Thanks Greg for your reply. The precise depth of the gasket groove is 1.8mm. I will wait then for Sepp to answer my emails.

Thanks Kevin.

Racing is the answer, but I don't remember the question!

Thank you Sepp for replying. I think you are saying you do not have any size 1.8mm and np more are being made?

Can anybody on this forum tell me where I can purchase the correct head gaskets?

Thanks Kevin

Yup, spot on.

Regarding your second question: the unpleasant answer is: You can't unless you have them made specifically. You could of course chuck your cylinders on a lathe and recut the groove to the correct depth for your headgasket.

Thanks Gregg.

We are going to machine a groove in the head to accomodate the thicker gasket. This should also help support the gasket where they are prone to blowing  as it will provide extra support where there is a gap to the cam chain o ring.

Regards Kevin

We have applied some more pressure but the gaskets are still too high and I think our solution will be an improvement over stock.
