Mounting 2AE cylinder on a 5A8

Hi Guys,

Hope you're doing well.

I finally start my TR1 engine restoration. I bought a very tired TR1 with crankshaft dead and I'm planning to make this engine running, install a nice fork and a Z650 SR tank (I've got one! Grin) and ride !

Last year I bought a 2AE Engine from a XV1000, aiming to remove the crankshaft and pistons to install it on my 5A8 but, trouble just started.. On my 5A8, rear cylinder is scratched, and my front cylinder exhaust valve guide is broken undecided

So now I'm just thinking to swap the cylinders assembly but, notice the 5A8 low cylinder is having 2 seals whilst the 2AE is flat. I compared the rest they look identical. I had few pictures for you to see.

Is anyone can confirm mounting 2AE cylinder is doable on a 5A8 ? Came shaft are identical ? Any advice ?

Thank you !

Yes, you must check the length with the head gasket.
I would take a slimer feet gasket (0,25)
S.

Racing is the answer, but I don't remember the question!

Thanks for your prompt reply !

I saw on google that 5A8 compression ratio is higher than 2AE, do you think that really matter ?

I’m going from a surprise to another, the rear cylinder on the 2AE is also scratched  undecided

I was confident as I thought I could mix cylinder and head cylinder from
both engine but with this gasket difference doesn’t help.

Both cylinder looks identical (front and aft), are they ?

Anyone has already tried to repair scratch in a cylinder. I checked in google, can’t find a cylinder in good shape ..

Hi Guys,

Anyone succeed to fix a scratched cylinder, instead of replacing it ? I still can't find any cylinder available on Google ..

Cylinder 1 and 2 are identical ?

Thanks !

Alex

Hi Alex,

cylinder #1 & #2 are absolutely identical. As XV1100 cylinders are geometrically identical to 2AE-cylinders you can also use those. If the 1063cc markings on the cylinder base are an issue for you, you have to figure out yourself.

I also have at least one set of XV1100 cylinders and probably even a set of XV1000(TR1) cylinders with the headgasket groove, in case you're interested, drop me a PM and we can take it from there.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg,

Glad to hear from you again !

Thanks a lot for your reply, in theory (depending of the current French lockdown) I should be able to know if I need 1 or 2 cylinders this weekend as I’m going to check cylinders and piston size with a true bike mechanic (Yes I’m just an amateur Wink)

I’ll reach you by MP to get more details.

I’ll also try to post some pictures of the beast, this forum is also for passionate isn’t it ?

Cheers
Alex

2 engines aren’t enough to make one running🙄 Iwas supposed to buy a serviceable 2AE engines but I found a timing chaîne guide in the alternator cas when I open it. Not a honest seller 😡

Hi Guys,

Here an update, i finally find on serviceable cylinder. I've just finished to paint everything and I'm thinking to put everything back in the crankcase.

Questions :  service manual state the crankshaft number for bearing calculation is stamped on crankshaft left web. I think I found the number (2) but as I didn't remove the bearing, could you please confirm there is no other number under the bearing ?

Also, is there any cross table with the bearing color and part number associated ? The bearing color isn't mentioned on the website, just the part number is listed.

Hi guys,

Is anyone already replaced rod bearing ? Could you please confirm the number 2 on the picture is the number used for bearing calculation ? Any part number/bearing color cross table ?

Thanks a lot for your help
Cheers
Alex

Yep, that's the number. On how to do it, i.e. the table: it's in the Haynes and Clymer manuals and I am pretty sure it's also in the tech-section of this forum as well.

If you have plastigauge available you still may want to check the clearances just to be sure.
