Alternator and rectifier-/ regulator problems.

Hi, TR1-friends....
I have a problem with the alternator on my ´82 (5A8) TR1. It keeps burning the alternator windings (!!!).
I had the alternator overhauled two years ago. It has been running for about 5.000 km. since the overhaul (due to oil leaks from the camshaft chain tunnel), but now there is no charging of the battery. I dismantled the left hand side engine cover to find thet the alternator windings was burnt up again. Is there any TR1 owners out there who has experienced anything like this ???

burning means lot's of electrical current. lot's of
current means a shortage within your cables or a
problem within the regulator. did you ever test your
regulator? you should be able to measure the functionality
of the 6 diods. check the link below (this from the technical
info). this describes the 12 measurements to check the
regulator. what you could also measure is the overall
power consumption out of the regulator. but with a completly
loaded battery (otherwise you have to subtract the current into
the battery) and everthing switched off. this should be around
~2Amps. This is at least the value Sepp Koch has at
it's 1200cc racing bike. At this bike is nothing left but the
generator, the regulator, a capacity of 20.000microF, the
T.C.I. box and the ignition system.
just an idea.
