Yes but you need two right types! The new Generation of PHM 40 are very good.
Dont take old and used ones.

where do you actually buy those nice carbs ? any good tips? And with what intakes do you combine these?

Flomo: Use the search button. Ali compiled all necessary info in a very informative post, but:

* Carbs and jets: Stein Dinse
* Inlet manifolds: Mikuni VM38-200

All the other details (incl. jetting) in Ali's post.  :)

And I agree with Sepp, Dellortos don't fare well with age. The plating on the slides can/will rub off and needles and needle-jets need frequent replacing. That said, two or three spare parts can easily bring your used carb quite close to a new one, where you simply don't have to put up with that kind of bother.

für alle die es interessiert meine Teileliste von Stein-Dinse:

Hat zusammen etwa 560 gekostet.
Bei den Gaszügen, die zum Gasgriff Magura Modell 305 passen, müssen etwa 15mm vom Aussenzug entfernt werden, damit sie passen.
Dafür wird die Blechhülse mit Kraft vom Aussenzug abgezogen und die Assenzugspirale 15mm mit der Eisensäge gekürzt. Dann das zu entfernende Aussenzugteil (ist eine Spirale) einfach mit 2 Zangen abwickeln und die Blechhülse wieder draufschieben.

got the dellortos on ive not road tested yet do I need to worry about the chokes or is a couple of twists of the throttle ok it seems to start this way

Twisting the throttle 3 times the whole way and hold it for a second is the way i do it ( to start a cold engine),
just close the chokes so no air or fuel disturbs the mixture,

No, just make sure these little choke- sliders are at down position ( by the spring)  and the rubber-seals beneath  are closing everything, sometimes the seals are worn, cost a penny to renew them,

Thanks Ali they should be fine as they are new carbs  took it out tonight for a little  run seems to go really well and it pulls really  well  its got 165 mains in it now will try 175s as stated on here

Took the bike out for a test ride yesterday wow those pumpers really work well still running the 165 main jets at the moment but it seems fine as is

I read on here about uprating the oil pump is it something I need to worry about  and would it be from any post 84 model

Won't do harm. Any post '84 will do. But also XV1100 and XVS1100 will work. Make sure, you don't already have the better pump in there. My '82 model did have one (retro-?)fitted.

Hello I've done enough dew miles now I've checked the plugs and they look very clean I amusing the 17 main jets 60 pilots needles on the lowest notch should I up the ilot jets ?

Do you have a stable idle or does it vary a lot, when the engine warms up? I am running VM38s, as you may know, but I selected the pilots so that once the bike has warmed up a bit (2-3 miles) it will hold a steady idle, which won't speed up even when really hot. Running #20ies on the VM38s whilst sucking air through the frame just to give you a direction.
