oil consumption - how much is too much??

My -81 TR1. takes about 1 liter oil per 1000 km now. Is that a sign of worn out piston rings?? I have no other leaks besides a small one at the front cylinder from the top gasket. I think it's an o-ring thats shot. Could this be the cause to the oil-consumption to?

If your engine looses 1 liter oil per Mm throug a leak, you should have  an oil puddle under your bike every time you park somewhere. I would bet on the piston rings and/or the valve stem seals.
Bye,
Georg

Thank's for your opinon George!
OK, I'll contemplate on renovating the engine...  The engine works just fine but it is quite loud; sounds like some bearnings are bad and that the pistons knock a bit.
Did some service on the oil pump a month ago and found a lot of dirt in the steel net and that the rotors was a bit pitted at the edges. The free play was inside of the limits though. Maybe a good idea to by a new and bigger (for xv1100) pump?
Gruss,
Lars

Here's a picture of the oil pump;

Notice all metalshavings, dirt and the broken o-ring above the pump!
Groves in the pump house; not good...
