ordering a new starter motor
26.10.21 at 04:33:29

Hi Gentleman, have just aquired an  83 xv 1000 TR1 in Perth Western australia, A japanese import with chain Drive.
Apparently it has a dead solenoid which I have ordered and was planning to order some other parts for the starting system to have on hand when they fail.
I would like to order a new starter motor,
Cafe Racer shop in England has 2 models with the long shaft, one for xv 1000 [yamaha no. 5A 810 10] the other is from ricks electrics for 85-86 xv 1000 and some other virago models
Has anybody ordered the correct one recently and can enlighten me

thanks in anticipation

Hi there,

you will always need the long-shaft version for a TR1. That being said, stock TR1s run a 2-brush starter in contrast to the later XV1100, which runs a 4-brush starter (and thus almost twice the torque). Only downside, the heavy-gauge wire from the solenoid to the post on the starter is longer as the 4-brush starter has the mounting point on the far end of the starter.

Also check ebay, lots of cheaper variants to be bought from there. Quality appears to be on par with all of them. (Probably just differently colored boxes really...)

Well worth the hassle though.

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks Greg,
The confusion i had is the same company list 2 long shaft models for various virago models  one is 189 ponds and the other is 217 ponds , i suspect the more expensive one from ricks elecrics may be a 2 pole motor for the earlier virago
thanks Scott
