Mal sehen welche zuerst kaputt geht. Wink

Hello all,

This is a good initiative and well done for finding someone to do it.

I have seen such initiatives with other forums and it always turns out fine. It helps smaller companies and it helps the interested parties so everyone is happy.

My exhaust is 98% fine but that is judging from the outside. Not sure if that 2% will eventually proceed, but with some care it might not, especially in the warm Cypriot climate.

In any case, I am not entirely 100% I would buy one but since I am not planning to sell this bike this could change.

My only concern is the originality of it and it would have to be 100% same as the original.

Another question; I think the original pipes are double-walled, is the new one going to be like this? I put a stainless exhaust on another bike I have and I got the usual blueing at the headers. I suppose this is inevitable with single-wall tubes. What does anyone think about this?

To be entirely honest I might end up getting one probably biting the bullet.

Since the price is substantial; is there an option for another material, e.g., titanium !?

Evros

Hello Evros, hello all,

Evros, you are right: The "Auspuffschmiede" guys will not be able to reproduce the original Yamaha parts in a completely identical way. This is due to the fact that Yamaha has of course more and better industrial production facilities than the manufacturing guys at the Auspuffschmiede.

Currently, I don't know how the Auspuffschmiede experts will produce the exhaust in detail. And up to now, no one else here knows. (As they will start their work next spring.) But I am optimistic that they will do a good job, as they are well known for their precise work.

I suppose that the replica mufflers will e. g. not get that exact "all-in-one sweep shape", compared to the original parts. Instead of that, the front and rear area of the mufflers will most probably be produced by welding two conical pipes together and cleaning the weld seam afterwards.

The exhaust mufflers of the Yamaha XS 750 and 850 (with their triple in-line engines) are shaped quite similarly to the TR1 pipes. The Auspuffschmiede produces replica parts for those XS-Triples, too - close to the original shape as well as „custom-made“, following the wishes of some individual customers. (Please see some pictures below.) This is why I suppose that we can expect a similar replica solution for the TR1.

Another aspect is the double wall design of the exhaust manifold for the front cylinder. Yes, Evros, you are right: Yamaha chose a double wall design in order to avoid any rainbow colour effects when the manifolds get hot.

The Auspuffschmiede will produce the manifolds als single wall parts. And all of the exhaust parts (the manifolds as well as the mufflers) will be made of stainless steel. This will of course give a different look: In a brandnew condition, the exhaust will look al little more "golden", compared to the chromed Yamaha parts. And after a while of usage, the replica exhaust will show all shades of rainbow colours. (Not only at the manifolds, but also on the muffler surfaces (as the mufflers will include several sheet inserts that serve as "inner blocks" for the exhaust gas).

This appearance will of course be different to the original Yamaha finish. Therefore, I understand very well that you are a bit sceptical about swapping your exhaust. So, let's keep it this way: If your original exhaust is still healthy, you will be happiest person not to change anything. (And the warm and dry climate on Cyprus will be your best supporter.) But as soon as the original exhaust is "rotten to death", a substitute will be hard to find. And in that moment, most of the TR1 riders would probably be happy if they had a reliable alternative at hand.

All in all, my proposal for you, Evros is: Let's wait for the delivery of the Auspuffschmiede components and see how the quality and sound is. It's no problem at all if you wait and decide later. For the meantime, I wish you many happy miles in the saddle of your bike.

Cheers,

Roland

Here some photos showing the exhaust design of the Yamaha XS 750/850 triple models - originals versus stainless steel replicas.

The "Auspuffschmiede" has realized a smale scale series for these triple models. Their exhausts have an unlimited guaranty, and sound and engine performance are identical to the original pipes. (Which is quite difficult to acheive with those old triple engines.)

The following pictures show a Yamaha XS 850 with replica exhaust, made of stainless steel. The original muffler shape has been adapted quite well in my opinion.

The „one-piece sweep design“ of the mufflers is imitated/adapted by welding two conical pipe pieces together and cleaning the weld seam afterwards.

The connection between the manifolds and the mufflers is designed quite simply (and different to the original exhaust): Just put it into each other, without any separate exhaust clamps. That connection works fine and is tight, due to the precise manufacturing work.

And some more photos of the stainless steel replica exhaust system for the Yamaha XS 850.
