Hello Evros, hello all,
Evros, you are right: The "Auspuffschmiede" guys will not be able to reproduce the original Yamaha parts in a completely identical way. This is due to the fact that Yamaha has of course more and better industrial production facilities than the manufacturing guys at the Auspuffschmiede.
Currently, I don't know how the Auspuffschmiede experts will produce the exhaust in detail. And up to now, no one else here knows. (As they will start their work next spring.) But I am optimistic that they will do a good job, as they are well known for their precise work.
I suppose that the replica mufflers will e. g. not get that exact "all-in-one sweep shape", compared to the original parts. Instead of that, the front and rear area of the mufflers will most probably be produced by welding two conical pipes together and cleaning the weld seam afterwards.
The exhaust mufflers of the Yamaha XS 750 and 850 (with their triple in-line engines) are shaped quite similarly to the TR1 pipes. The Auspuffschmiede produces replica parts for those XS-Triples, too - close to the original shape as well as „custom-made“, following the wishes of some individual customers. (Please see some pictures below.) This is why I suppose that we can expect a similar replica solution for the TR1.
Another aspect is the double wall design of the exhaust manifold for the front cylinder. Yes, Evros, you are right: Yamaha chose a double wall design in order to avoid any rainbow colour effects when the manifolds get hot.
The Auspuffschmiede will produce the manifolds als single wall parts. And all of the exhaust parts (the manifolds as well as the mufflers) will be made of stainless steel. This will of course give a different look: In a brandnew condition, the exhaust will look al little more "golden", compared to the chromed Yamaha parts. And after a while of usage, the replica exhaust will show all shades of rainbow colours. (Not only at the manifolds, but also on the muffler surfaces (as the mufflers will include several sheet inserts that serve as "inner blocks" for the exhaust gas).
This appearance will of course be different to the original Yamaha finish. Therefore, I understand very well that you are a bit sceptical about swapping your exhaust. So, let's keep it this way: If your original exhaust is still healthy, you will be happiest person not to change anything. (And the warm and dry climate on Cyprus will be your best supporter.) But as soon as the original exhaust is "rotten to death", a substitute will be hard to find. And in that moment, most of the TR1 riders would probably be happy if they had a reliable alternative at hand.
All in all, my proposal for you, Evros is: Let's wait for the delivery of the Auspuffschmiede components and see how the quality and sound is. It's no problem at all if you wait and decide later. For the meantime, I wish you many happy miles in the saddle of your bike.
Cheers,
Roland
