Hi,
I had the pleasure of owning an XV750SE -82 from 1985 to 2001 (I covered approx. 35000 km with it). The only negative I have to say about the bike is the vibrations I felt in the handlebar ends around 80 - 90 km/h - made my fingers numb after a while. The TR1-81 and the XV1100-95 I own now are much better in this respect.
The starter motor is of course a weak part, but with the modifications explained elsewhere on these pages, it's ok. It has a more primitive engagement mechanism than the other XVs and can make a lot of noise trying to engage the flywheel.
I had to replace the cams, rocker arms and valves when I bought it (35000 km) due to strong pitting. The replacement rocker arms had a different routing of the oil - in stead of coming out where they touched the cam, the new ones had an opening half way out on the arm, pouring oil on the cam before the contact point.
You should also check for wear in the rear swing bearing and shims (new needle bearings and shims of various sizes are available).
No problems with the sealing between cylinder and head.
Small tank - only 12 litres. (The TR1 tank fits if you cut back on the saddle front.)
I recommend taking the rear damper out and adjust it according to what is described elsewhere on this site. If not, you always need to have it pressurized with air.
Have a look at

happy riding!
