Two into one exhaust from OEM bits

I mentioned my new-to-me TR had all the original bits on it, but it's taken me a few days to realise that there is something missing: one of the exhaust cans! Not having seen a TR before, I've been referring to magazine article pics and hadn't worked it out! The rightside OEM exhaust runs all the way through from the front cylinder, but the header from the rear cylinder has been neatly cut-and-shut to feed into the right can, which may possibly have been rechromed. Were the two cans cross-connected originally?

I wonder if a PO thought this was a cheap way to deal with a mashed lefthand can, or is it a known 'performance' mod? I think I prefer the symmetry of two cans, nevermind the extra weight, and would certainly consider buying a s/h rear pipe and leftside can.

Hello Nick,

this is really bizarre. Something I never heard of in 30 years.
Yes, there is a cross connection, but it's not more than one inch in diameter.
The OEM exhaust can on the left side is a weird construction that tends to be rotten after 25 years.
May be that the previous owner build this two in one thing because he could not use the left can any longer.
Anyway this can only bring less performance and even more heat to the rear cylinder.
OEM exhaust parts are no longer availible, at least in germany. Hope You find some.

Hello Nick

To put the bike back to original you will need a new nearside can and the short exhaust tubing that connects the rear cyclinder to the nearside can and the offside can. It provides connection and balance between both cans.

Both of these parts are difficult to get hold of now.

The more I look at it, the more I realise that whoever did it put a lot of effort and probably expense into the job, making a full-size stub for the re-routed rear header and quite likely modifying the internals (judging by a particular weld line) before having the can rechromed. It could be that gasflow for the rear cylinder is actually improved, and the bike certainly sounds good but not too loud. I think I'll leave it as it is for the time being.

By the way, I'll not just excuse your perfect English, Stefan, but thank you very much for it!

This makes sense. As long as the bike runs well.
The replacement/aftermarket exhausts, such as BSM may look fine, but do not really improve the performance. If You know what I mean.
