K&N YA-1550 Air Filter
06.10.25 at 23:45:36

Hello,
Would anyone know if there are any K&N YA-1550 air filters still available anywhere in Europe ?
They are discontinued and I've only found one place in the USA that still has them in stock.

Are there any other alternatives to try ?

I had hoped to buy the very nice air filter from an Italian company called 61Meccanica, but they seem to have gone out of business.

Hi Ondradek,

I bought a spare a while ago and found it via ebay. But admittedly I had to wait for a couple of weeks in order to find one in good condition and for reasonable cost. If you find an alternative, let me know.

Cheers,
Greg

I've gone ahead and ordered the only one I could find, from a company in the USA called Milky Motorsports.
https://milkymotorsports.com/products/kneya-1550?_pos=1&_sid=473f9551c&_ss=r

We'll see how it goes.

Half expecting to get an email saying it's actually out of stock.

HA !

Just got an email saying my order has been cancelled.
I guess they haven't got them in stock after all.

Back to square one.

As a last resort I emailed K&N asking if they might do a small production run of the YA-1550, telling them I was sure they might geta  few customers here and on other motorcycle forums.

Got this reply today...

Thank you for your enquiry,
Unfortunately, this filter was discontinued in 2022,it was discontinued due to low sales numbers.
Sadly, K&N no longer offer a custom filter program meaning we are unable to manufacture small runs of filters.

This means that unfortunately K&N cannot consider your request.

So, no joy there.
The search continues.

My XV920R has a K&N type of air filter in it.  I will clean and re-oil it during this winter season, but only because I have it and the service kit anyway.
I have heard many different sides to this argument over which type of filter is 'better'.  There may not be much difference is air flow at the RPMs that our bikes typically run.  We typically do not race them either, so is there really a performance gain to be had?  Not sure.
The paper air filters do a good job of keeping small particles out of the engine.  Some people say that the K&N style lets more of the smaller particles in as a trade off for more air flow.  They were made for racing applications originally, so engine rebuilds are expected more often than what we expect on our street machines.
My suggestion is to get a new paper filter and enjoy your ride.
This could start an argument as big as 'which oil is better', so I apologize in advance!

Once you start opening up the air box to be less restrictive, you will eventually get the airfilter wet. If a paper airfilter gets wet, it will clog up in the spot it gets wet. If it gets wet all way round...

Cheers,
Greg
