Differences of Virago models XV920, XV920R and TR1

I am trying to understand if the frames/skeletons of Virago models XV920 (shaft drive), XV920R (chain drive), and TR1 (chain drive) are the same? I am searching to find a model to begin my project with and i am currently wondering on that question. Would appreciate an answer. I prefer one of the aforementioned chain drive models, but all of my ideas for my dream bike are based on XV920 models, hence the question. Also, i would appreciate if someone can inform me of any other differences between the aforementioned models, with the exception of the shaft/chain drive difference for which i am already aware of.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Hello Demtrios,

the backbone is always the same, it is the rear-centersection that varies between the different models.

Cheers,
Greg

I would always go for a chaindrive, gives you much more options in wheels and swingarm of your project.

Hello MacRudi. Hope you are doing well. Unfortunately, i haven't managed to begin my project yet, due to the nature of my work. Nonetheless, i am committed, and hope to begin in 2022.

Good work needs time. I know it from myself. So I wish you enough time in the next future Wink

Hello. This seems like appropriate topic.
Trying to fix possible air leak near intake on my XV920RJ 1982 (Google vin search defines my bike as such. Bike passport is all mixed up anyway and can`t be trusted). Somehow CMSNL says XV920R 1982 has additional gasket there (8). XV920 1982 goes only with O ring. The connecting piece (2) is the same.
My only logical explanation is that R came later and Yamaha tried to fix some problem with that. Probably the same problem I have right now.
Can anyone confirm that flat casket came later and is the better version? Or vice versa and I should replace the O ring?

There are different versions of the intake rubbers. If they have an O-ring this one should be in good condition or replaced. The same for the flat paper gasket. In both cases you can apply Dirko or Hylomar or some similar silicone to support the gasket. I once had an o ring that was missing partly...

Thanks.
But still, to me the fact that nr2 is the same (with O ring groove) hints that O ring was not so reliable and was replaced by flat gasket. I think if carbs need to come off by any reason, I`ll go with the flat gaskets.
