hello chaps , new member needs help bought a 1981 TR1 and it runs badly in the higher speed ranges 70+looking on this site it seems many of the problems are the tci but on my bike I know the mixture valve is not working as it should be so I need to know is it ok/possible to by-pass the valve ,how will it effect running ,and who will be the best supplier of a modern tci many thanks

Are you talking about the mixture control valve located under the small plastic cover before/under the tank (where the ignition coils do also sit)? I dont believe that its responsible for a weak engine, but You can remove it and throw it away as far as possible, then close the according pipes at the intake rubber.

poor engine power is often caused by wrong camshaft timings or a weak rubber duct on the air cleaner box.

Quick commonly it's one of the gazillian vacuum tubes that go to/come from the mix valve. Don't forget to plug the opening on the manifold and check the vacuum hoses to the petcocks.

Greg

ok now I have thrown the mixture valve away adjusted float heights as per manual and put the main jets in the right carb 126 rear cylinder 124 front but now its running rich especially the front cylinder now I have taken the mixture valve air supply away ,proven by the fact it runs better without the airbox connected ,so now does anyone know if I should go down a main jet size or two or is it better to make adjustments elsewhere ,idle mixture screw or lower the needle

As You can not lower the needle, You can only adjust the idle mixture screws. For a proper result, You should use a CO testing device. If You haven't got one, You can tighten the srew carefully and then loosen it again for 2 and a half rotations. This would be the original setting and is recommended in such cases to start with. Some people here use these colortune plugs.
Synchronizing makes sense, but is always the last step, when everything else (valve clearance, idle mixture ... ) is set up correctly.
I would not choose a smaller jet size, because the engine needs that much gas for cooling. It can get fairly hot.

Cheers,

Stefan

thanks for the help guys ,just to let you know that after messing with the carbs she still wouldn't run correctly ,rear cylinder hot front lukewarm only .So checked compression both cylinders showed up ok 150/160 which was strange as I had better compression on the duff pot,so I did a quick leak down test and discovered that the inlet valve on the front pot was so tight their was no gap.Adjusted the tappet and so far all seems good which begs the question how tight are the rear pots tappets but thats for another day as it looks like a bit of a task just to get to them ,maybe because they're so hard to get at leads to total neglect which after the chat I had with the previous owner with his records of services and repairs is at odds with my expectations

Once you have removed the airbox, the rear exhaust valve is quite easy to get to (and is the one usually in most need of attention). The rear inlet valve will require you to unplug a couple of hoses to get to it, but nothing to write home about!

Greg

ok one last quick one and hope I am sorted ,the question today is , can a faulty tci produce a perfectly good spark on one cylinder but a weak spark on the other ,so one pot runs hot as it should but the other is only warm to touch ,i have checked the ohms on the pick ups and both read as stated in the manual
