There are youtube videoes concerning the starter assembly for the 81-82 USA version. Not the diagram posted above, I think.
For my USA XV920RH I had to replace the starter.  
The planetary gear slipping is a known issue, simpler fix.  Shim, Loctite, or weld.
I would remove the left case cover and examine mechanism there.
