I have ditched the OEM Hitachis. Time for new carburetors.

Hi Sepp, is there anything I did wrong?Wink)) I've searched this forum (translating the posts from German) and viragotech for any kind of info but couldn't get a straight answer. I have narrowed my research to the options I listed above, hence the poll, to get a final answer. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Adhd,

let's just put it this way: Sepp is from Bavaria and it is custom to at least very briefly introduce yourself and your bike/project etc. Also your selection of carbs represents, what is deemed good and righteous in VTF, but not necessarily what some overhere would agree with. Secondly, what's your aim with the bike? Your selection of carbs spans from pretty awesome to absolutely rubbish (from a performance standpoint), when read from top to botttom.
Lastly which other accompanying mods do you plan to employ? Slapping some huge and very racy carbs on an otherwise stock bike may not exactly yield the kind of performance benefits which you might be after.

My personal vote: Mikuni VM38s. With a bit of ingenuity you can make them look stock (with a set of different silicone-elbows) and there's even a set of Mikuni rubber inlet manifolds, which place the carbs closely to the head. Additionally there's a 2in1 throttle-cable splitter, which is a bolt on fit with the stock throttle and works a treat.

Hope this gives you some insight.

Cheers,
Greg

Oh, Sorry. I'll fix it right away;)
They call me Mad, I live in Brisbane, Australia. I own 2 TR1s, one XV1000 and 750 among other bikes.
I've just started modifying the 750. Nothing groundbreaking. Single seat, USD forks, probably will keep the oem tank although I'm tempted to get the Benelli. Went through 2 sets of Hitachis and started researching what others are using. I'm not really concerned about stock look. The only reason I want to change carburetors is to replace those old, crappy ones that I had to pull out and fix so many times that I don't want to do it anymore;)
This is what she looks at right now:

Yes I know;) That's why I'm making some drop down trees to lift the front up a little.

Greg, with 38s do you use xs650 throttle cables? Which manifold did you use?

Yup, it's that set for the XS650. I use genuine Mikuni VM38-200 rubber manifolds.

There are a few shops selling vm34s for virago but I've found that they might be too small.

I'm running 750 heads on my TR1 (with 1100 crank) and after a testride today, I can tell you, that the VM38s are definitely not too big for the heads with the smaller valves.

Cheers,
Greg

Can't say much (yet) as I also fitted a new homegrown exhaust and did some other mods. So some testriding and rejetting is due.

I'll probably know more tomorrow (if the weather's as warm and sunny as it was today!)

Vm38s, XV750 heads and a proper GreasyGreg exhaust is all it takes to make me grin from ear to ear. Usable power from 2500rpm onwards and revs straight to 7500rpm with no hickups, to answer your question. It was still too cold to run it as hard as it would pull, but I am confident that it'll uphold the first impression!

Cheers,
Greg
