Well fingers crossed that is my problem. I ordered a new one and should have it on Wednesday. I will update this post when I install it.

Today I installed my new rightside crankcase cover seal (the one mentioned in previous comments). Still no oil pressure to top of crankcase cover

Taking Nannos advice( big thank you Greg) I checked the oil filter cover to see if it was the correct one.

Marking the  oil exit hole in the top of the filter cover and the oil entrance  hole in the crankcase cover ( to crank and camshafts), the 2 holes do not come anywhere close to lining up. The filter cover  hole  is over 1cm clockwise from the crankcase cover oil hole when the oil filter cover is installed

My bike is a 1985 XV1000 and it looks like the oil filter cover is from a 1986 and onwards xv1100 .

I looked online for pictures to compare filter covers .

The first picture with the bolts is the same as what is on my bike now and I now think it is Not the correct one.  The 2nd picture is what I believe to be the one that I need.

My question is should the 2 oil holes line up? ? This is making me crazy.

Tom

Yes the holes must line up. Thats why the oil filter must point to the outside with the open end. The oil flows from the filter housing through the paper into the filter and then through the cover and the holes in the engine housing to the oil lines which lead to the heads. The cover on the second picture looks like a TR1 cover.

Hey Tom,

the second one looks like spot on the money. Also V-star (BT1100, XVS1100) covers actually have the hole in the correct spot again, but the locating tabs are a bit thin(-ner) walled and I managed to snap off an ear in the past...

If you're really desperate, you could just drill a new hole into the cover in the correct orientation and plug or weld the other one up.

Thank you everyone for responding and your help. I was able to buy one on Ebay from  a guy in Canada. Should be here in about 2 weeks.  I was surprised how expensive they are. The XV1000 must be a rare bike. I am hoping this will finally fix the problem. Then I will continue to turn the bike into a bobber.
