Splitting the Cases
18.12.20 at 13:21:22

Hi All, I have a 1981, 981cc chain driven TR1 and I’m after some advise.  If I was going to split the cases in order to replace the counter axle attached to the front sprocket (the sprocket splines are badly worn producing some bad vibes), referred to as the middle drive shaft in Linda’s Manuals (which are very helpful by the way).  Apart from inspecting everything & replacing the gaskets and seals, which is a given.  What additional parts if any would folks recommend replacing as a matter of course, primarily because there’s an opportunity to do so.

Hi there,

well, if you have the cases open at first, I'd probably do the bearing shells, because why wouldn't you not? (And those are only like 45 Euros) After having tremendous success with polishing the guide rod of the selector forks, I'd clean that one too and polish it to a mirror finish, especially as you'll do the gearbox anyway as I understood it.

Not really necessary to split the cases, but a later model oilpump is a good upgrade and always worth the effort. Not sure if you can still get new rings for TR1s, if you can, I'd do that as well and as you now have the whole lot apart, lap the valves in and give it a good once-over in the head department with new valvestem-seals just for good measure and swap the ally camshaft bushing for a 6205 ballbearing (one-side metal-shielded, i.e. suffix -Z).

Those changes will not set the world on fire, but assuming that nothing else is amiss with your TR1 those are some of the easy mods I'd recommend.

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks for the input Greg it's much appreciated.  I've noticed a few comments about issues with over thick head gaskets.  Is this a problem that you've experienced.
Kind Regards
Jason

Hi there,

well to be honest I did in the past and then countered this by switching over to XV1100 cylinders and rotating assembly as they run a more conventional MLS (multi-layer-steel) headgasket.

Sepp (here on the forum) has had some headgaskets manufactured to varying heights. A link on how to get in touch with him is either hidden in "Technics" or "Misc" tab on the top of the page.

Cheers,
Greg
