Has anyone done a spoked wheel conversion like Robert Lincoln's lately ?

I've got XS650 wheels on my XV920R now, but note that while Robert Lincoln says you need 7mm spacer on the rear sprocket, Kevin Emery says it should be 12mm.
Which is it ?

I'm hoping that 7mm would do the trick as I think such a spacer could be made from an old sprocket.
