Spoked Wheel Conversion - Cush Drive
11.05.24 at 01:05:13

I'm getting my 1982 XV920R back on the road after 25 years in storage.
One thing I have always wanted to do is change to spoked wheels.

Looking at Robert Lincoln's notes, on this site, it seems XS650 hubs are the best way to go.
But is the TX750 hub equally good for the rear wheel ?
I see it has the same brake shoes as the TR-1

One thing I have just realised this evening is that both of those hubs do not have a cush drive.
Is this a problem for the XV engine ?
Do people who have converted their bikes to spoked wheels just go without the cush drive ?

Another option the Suzuki GT750 hub, does seem to have a cush drive.

I'm also seeing cush drive sprockets online, but not sure yet it any will fit a Yamaha.
Has anyone here experience with those ?

Thanks

Basically I'm just trying to pick the best option for a rear spoked hub. I have bought an XS650 wheel for the front

I'm worried about fitting a hub without a cush drive, but have talked to people who have fitted XS650 rear wheels on a TR-1 and who report no problems.

My choices are XS650, or TX750 without cush drive, or...

other hubs I've been recommended with cush drive... Suzuki GT750, Yamaha RD350 or Honda CB750.

Any opinions ?

You can look at the donor bike how the engine is mounted - in rubbers or not.

RD 400 has rubber mountings and a cushion drive.

It's a question of torque peaks.
The fewer cylinders, the larger the displacement, the less distributed the ignition points are and the less crankshaft mass, the greater the torque peaks.
It's about the gear wheels, chain and sprockets and also the rear tires (but there only about wear).
Although without the experience of no cushion drive I would use one, if there is the chance.

Noise could be another aspect.

I've taken the plunge and have bought a Suzuki GT750 hub.
