Carb Float Bowl Drain Plug
02.07.24 at 19:46:57
The float bowl drain plug screws on my carbs are stripped and I'll have to drill them out.
Replacement part for this 1982 bike is 4X71419101, but there are none available here in UK and I'd have to order from CMSNL in Netherlands which is quite a bit more expensive.
The part number for later bikes is 12R1419100, and is available at a much lower price.
Does anyone know if they are interchangeable ?
Or do I have to go with the older part number ?
Thanks

Hello Odradek,
here is the information for the drain plug, seen at MSP (Motorcycle Spare Parts (NL)
https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/de/yamaha-ersatzteile/1989-xv1100-virago-motorrad/vergaser
See also the pictures, the lower one shows a section of the parts usage record.
Hope this helps.
With kind regards Anja

Siehe auch die Bilder dazu, das untere zeigt einen Ausschnitt aus dem Teileverwendungsnachweis.
Hoffe das hilft weiter.

Thank you Anja.
I've just discovered that Yamaha switched from Hitachi to Mikuni carbs for XV bikes in 1988, hence the different part numbers.
As my bike is 1982, I think I'll need to go for the more expensive part, 4X71419101.
More expensive as they are hard to find now.

How many thousands is the difference between the two kinds of screws?

Hi Odradek, hi all,
the 4X71419101 drain plug (about 12.00 € at cmsnl.com) has a
M6x1 thread
, whereas many other spare part drain plugs (OEM, available for 3.50 to 10.00 €) are equipped with M6x0.75 threads. Therefore you will have to stay with the Yamaha part in order to fit correctly into the threads of your float bowl.
Cheers,
Roland

Two new Hitachi drain plugs are on their way from CMSNL.
Managed to drill and remove the old ones this morning.
Now I've found the main jets are not what the manual says they should be.
Will have to investigate that.

Hi Odradek, hi all,
when checking the carbs, I found it helpful to use some OEM overhaul kits ("TR1 Vergaser Kit"), e. g. the ones made by Keyster. You can get them at "youngtimer-bikes-shop.de" for example (alias forum member "schraubaer").
Those kits include all jets and sealings. (Everything that could eventually be destroyed and/or mixed up by former bike owners.) And the best is: Two drain plugs are included, too...
.
Cheers,
Roland

My bike is a 1982 XV920R.
I have Clymer and Haynes manuals, and both say 124 front and 126 rear.
My bike has 126 front and 128 rear.
It was running fine last time it was on the road so maybe I'll stick with that.

I have two carb rebuild kits, and hadn't looked through them yet.
But yes, they do have drain plugs !!!
Oh well, I have two more on the way.
Always good to have a few spares !
