Voltage Regulator
06.03.22 at 09:46:47

Hello all,
The voltage regulator has crapped out (stopped working properly) and so I went on-line for what was listed as suitable for XV1000/TR1, BUT when the new one arrived, no brown wire. Three white, one red and one black.

Presumably it needs a brown wire connected somewhere, but can it be run without the brown wire connected to anything, or is there a work-around so that I can just use the five-wired regulator without damaging (overcharging?) the battery and other components?

Or should I get back on-line and find one with the three white, one red, one black and one brown?

Cheers,
Richard

The brown wire is a sensing wire. As such it is inherent to the design of the original regulator. There's plenty of more modern regulators, which work just fine with a permanently excited alternator as is found on the TR1.

I'd say, give it a shot, fire up the bike and hook up a multimeter to the battery. As long as you stay under 15V you shouldn't blow any bulbs etc.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg,

thanks for that advice, as always! My wife says that she wishes that I was permanently excited! Grin

Cheers, Richard
