TR1 Mini Indicators.
12.08.10 at 19:57:56

Hello V Twin fans. I have just finished a nut & bolt rebuild of a 1985 TR1 and I have fitted 12v 21/23w Mini Indicators to find that they no longer ‘Flash’ but just stay on? I have fitted a new non Yamaha 21/23w relay, but this causes the indicators not to function at all. Does anyone have any ideas of what is required to get these mini’s to work?

Hi,

It might sound daft but even new relays stick sometimes, I'd try your old relay (or another original Yamaha) just to be sure the new one isn't the culprit...

Cheers, bob-tr

Thanks Bob. Have tried two different relays of the correct volts/wattage, which do not ‘click’ in and therefore no lights at all, and have put the original relay back several times, which produces the opposite, where the indicators just stay on (no flashing), either left or right. If I tap the original relay, the indicators will flash once, and will continue to do so if I keep tapping, suggesting that the load is either too much or too little? Yet the volts/wattage of the minis bulbs is the same as the original indicators, and if fit them instead of the minis, everything works fine? I hate ‘lectris!!!

Hi Brian

I experienced something similar, not with a bike but with an old Triumph GT6 I owned until recently, it's probably too little load. With the GT6 it turned out to be a problem with the earth. I don't know enough about the wiring of a TR1 (yet), but try to use a cable to bridge any gaps between indicators and battery's earth as a test.

Cheers
Bob

Hi.
If the mini indicators are LED-type, then they do not draw enough current to operate the original flasher relay.
I also fitted mini LED signals.  Signals on, but not flashing.  I also fitted a non-Yamaha relay:

Note that the replacement relay must be 'electronic' if you hare using LED signals.

I also had the problem with the signals now not coming on at all.  I found I needed to switch 2 of the wires to the new relay, and all is working fine now.

"Which 2 wires?" you ask.... well, I did not document it, so I will have to remove the seat when I get home tonight and refresh my memory.

I took the cover off of my old relay, cleaned up the insides and fiddled about until it worked. I think I bent something as the indicators flash real slooow now Grin
