Hello Folks,

Doing a rebuild and need a pair of new 1st oversize pistons and rings. Not able to source them from Yamaha in Australia and they tell me that they are a discontinued line and good luck finding them (in other words, go away and stop bothering us, or buy a new motorbike).

Does anyone know where I can get a set, either Europe , USA, Solomon Islands etc? Or is this an engineering thing, find a suitable piston and machine it to the right size?

Any (nice) suggestions welcome!

Thanks for that advice, but still no luck. Is the piston common to other models of the same era, eg XT500, SR500? Are there any other pistons that might fit from any other motorbike/car/horse/etc.

(by-the-way, I was joking about the Horse, i know that horse's valves won't fit an XV1000/TR1)

sorry about taking a while to reply, I have been away with work
I have the 981 motor, the original sized pistons (95mm diameter). Unfortunately I damaged the pistons when stripping the motor, it was probably due for a re-bore anyway.

Hello everyone,

Still trying to get my XV1000/tr1 rebuilt.

Would XV1100 pistons be a direct replacement? The 1100 have the same bore but the crank is slightly longer stroke, or would there be a difference in the piston-pin to piston crown height as well?

I have located some XV1100 pistons in USA, but they will end up costing about US$500 (or about Aus$830) for the two pistons plus rings, and I am really keen to find out for sure if the 1TA 11636-00-00 pistons (1986 XV1100) are identical to the 5A8-11631-00 pistons (1981 XV1000/TR1) before committing to buy them.
