Relacement swing arm
07.12.15 at 12:04:19

Hello All

I am about to start a new TR1 project. One of my aims will be to reduce the weight of the bike. (I am getting old and find my current TR1 a little too heavy.  Sad )

The swing arm on the TR1 is considerably heavy. Does anyone know of an alternative swing arm that I can replace the existing with. I am looking for something lighter so aluminum would be preferable. My engineering skills are limited so I am looking for something that is either a direct replacement or can be fitted relatively easily.

Thank you for your help.

Kevin (UK) and Happy Christmas

Rumour (and some old pix from 1981 or '82 Daytona race) suggest, that the YZ250 swingarm of the cantilever-monoshock YZ-models (must be 78 or 79) should fit with bearable hassle and is made from ally.

Hope this helps and is not just a rumour.

Cheers,
Greg

Hello Greg

I believe that is just a rumour. There is a blog on the Aprilia forum from a guy who calls himself Hellgate. He has re-engineered an XV920, the blog runs to 26 pages.  The guy says a YF250 swing arm will fit. But, he never got around to doing it.

I purchased a YF250 swing arm after reading his blog.  Unfortunately it is beyond my engineering skills to make it fit. It certainly is not bolt on.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Regards
Kevin

Sorry for the typo. I meant YZ250, as you stated.

No I didn't mean Hellgate, it was on the ADVRider-Forum in the states, this guy by the name of Jim Bar shared some pictures of his old Daytona-racebike, but unfortunately when going through the thread, it turns out, that he has removed the pictures from his webalbum...

Would you happen to have a picture of said YZ250 swingarm and maybe a few explaining words, where this caused some headache?
(I might be interested in helping you make some room in your shed...  Wink )

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Kevin,
Quote:
I am getting old and find my current TR1 a little too heavy.

I could have wrote this, i try to get rid of some weight for years. But: without changing the "look" of a TR1 dramatically it will not work.
To begin with the swingarm is- In my opinion- one of the most difficult things to loose weight.
There are so many other possibilities to to reach your aim, such as:  Battery, ( up to 7-8 Kg), the much too big and uneffective Headlight and all that unnecessary stuff at the front ( it´s like a big counter-weight you have to swing around while you are steering), Front Fender (heavy), Rear frame and all the christmas tree decoration (i like a single seat, i hate that voice  from the back trying to advice me to close the throttle), the exhausts are heavy, the footpeg-mounting- alloy -things  look like a duc-panigale main frame, and so on.
I tried to get more weight to the centerpoint, it helps a bit. But to get under 200Kg in street -legal / MOT condition is not easy (and cheap), i have my bike at  around 204 now with 10 l fuel. Unfortunatly a biological tuning of the driver is not an option for us, i believe,

Ali, even more biological tuning will make you disappear completely. I would consider buying a lighter bike. A good running RD350 YPVS has nearly the same power as an original TR1 but weighs nearly 100 kilo less... Wink

Maybe an alloy swing arm from a Ducati 900ss is be an option?
The shape is similar:

All

Thanks for your help with this.

Greg: The issue with the YF250 swing arm is the attachment point to the frame. The TR1 swing arm attachment points sit either side of the frame on the outside. The YF250 swingarm attachment points sits within the frame. (I hope that makes sense? I have attached two photos.) I would have to re-engineer and align the mounting and bearings and that is beyond my capability. You probably could help me to create some space in my shed. My email address is in the mailing list. Please contact me separately on that.

Ali: I will try all the weight saving ideas you have suggested. I was also thinking of replacing wheels, sealed rear chain cases and fuel tank to reduce weight. I will keep the headlamp as I think the large headlamp defines the TR1. Isn't it the largest headlamp fitted to a motorcycle? Also, if I remove the headlamp bowl where else can I put all the electrical loom connections. 200Kg will be target for the bike. I will let you know how I progress.

Mark: I think the Ducati swing arm may work. Thanks for the suggestion. The attachment point to the frame sits around the frame just like the TR1 and may only require spacers which is within my capability to build. The Ducati swing arm looks to be designed for a very wide wheel so I will need to get hold of dimensions so I can check if it would look right on the TR1.

Thanks all for your feedback.

Happy Christmas
Kevin

165 kg race ready, with stock swingarm.... maybe 172kg with full tank german street legal
i would never use an 40 years old alloy swingarm from a 250cc bike in a 1000cc
you save the most weight with bolt off and cut off  Cool
the chain case, the chain (replace it with a 520 chain), the forks, the wheels, fuel tank, subframe, footrests, battery, exhaust system etc...
these are the heavy components
