Treffen/Rally 2019
22.01.18 at 12:55:31

Hello All

At a number of the annual Rallies I have been asked if I could organise a Rally in the UK. I live in a small village called Pitton. Holding a Rally here would have a big impact on our small population. I have been in discussion with several people in our village and they are very  supportive. I also have a small number of riders who have offered their support. So in principal we can hold the Rally in the UK.

The big question is, if I organise the Rally in the UK will you come? I know it is very early to ask you to commit but I am trying to gauge the interest. If there is interest I will organise the Rally. If few riders are interested I will not progress it further and you will have to find an alternative location for the 2019 Rally. Please respond here, in the Forum and let me know if you will come.

The proposed date would be 16th – 18th August 2019.  I spoke to Willi and he suggested holding the rally just prior to the Manx TT. That way, riders can come here then go on to the Isle of Man if they wish.

Pitton is 7miles (11kms) from Salisbury and 10 miles (16kms) from Stonehenge. We are also 130 miles (209kms) west of Dover. The world standard Sammy Millar motorcycle museum is 30 miles (48kms) from here.

To make it a little more interesting the UK officially leaves the EU on the 29th March 2019. This could be the first TR1 Rally outside of the EU!

So, are you interested, will you come? Please respond here in the forum.

All the best and hope to see you all in 2019.

Regards
Kevin

A very nice lady who lives in the village translated the above for me. She was born in Austria so apologises to all our German readers if her translation is not accurate.

Hallo Alle

Kevin

Now this DOES sound quite tempting. I have no idea, what 2019 will bring for me, but I am definitely interested.

It should also roughly be around the time the Pendine-beach-races are going to be.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Kevin,
this is a nice Idea to have a meeting in GB, Salisbury is not too far from my place,
i will be there if i can, depends a bit on my constitution /Age,
only to problems will i have -which can be solved-  :
left hand driving ( roundabouts are  my nightmare) and a new travelling - passport, to get out of Europe, onto what?
Despite of that i love green England, and the Queen, she gave me a wave when i visited Bath ages ago driving  my Zündapp DB200, i will never forget,

What an excellent idea Smiley Smiley Kevin,
just heard from Hannes that there are plans for 2019, guess you`re an early bird?
We`re all early birds - but on the other hand i understand that such an extraEuropean Meeting will be planned quite early.
And Willie`s Plan to do it just before the Manx - I suggested just that when Hannes told me about your plan for 2019 - is amazing brilliant!!!

Originally this 2018-Manx should be my last ... but never pray never  Cheesy

On the other hand i am with you, Ali, it`s crazy to make plans so far in future - at our AGE  Tongue

With other  words, Kevin, I will surely join if alive  Grin

hope to see you all in Austria

Kevin, this is a great idea and Annemiek and i will attend if nothing serious happens... I am also a little bit afraid of driving on the wrong side of the road, but i´ll do like wolfgang and practice it a lot this season to be prepared for next year! ;-

As most TR1-drivers are not very active in the forum i´m afraid you will not get very much feedback here. How many people do you need to say "yes, i will organize the rally"?

Hello George

I have the same problems when I attend the TR1 rally's, I have to drive on the wrong side of the road. However I am not a very good motorcycle rider but I manage. You are a far better rider so I think you will do well.

For the number of attendees: I really need about 50 to make it work. I hope to get a few from the UK who are unwilling to travel to Europe.

I do not expect anyone to commit at this early stage. I am trying to gauge what the feedback is, at the moment the feedback is positive and no one has said no. It's good feedback so far. There is an exception, Doris & Willi have already said they will come. Than you Doris & Willi.

We do not have to make a decision on the UK rally yet. But I hope it takes place and I hope to see you all in 2019.

Regards
Kevin

PS

Ali: I spoke to the Queen and she said she remembers seeing you. She hopes you will come in 2019!

I talked to Karsten, Christian, Pete and TicTac and they will come.

Hi Kevin,

of course Christian and me will attend the meeting in the UK. The last time I was there with a motorcycle was in 1973 with a Honda 750 Four. But why do you say "see you in 2019" ? I hope we see us this year in Austria and on the straight line from your place to there lies Walschbronn.

Cheers and greetings from Walschbronn

I think Uli has been drinking too much schnapps. No we are not in Cornwall, that is another 200kms west of us. We are very near to Salisbury. I placed a map on the first page. The clue is in the arrow.

I am glad to hear that you and Christian will come to the UK in 2019.

And, yes I will see you this year. I intend to come to the rally in Austria. As you say I would have to ride past your front door, it would be rude not to pop in.

Hello

We do get our fair share of 'liquid sunshine'. But I wouldn't let it put you off.

The amount of rain we get in the UK tends to be exaggerated. The west coast of the UK gets most of the rainfall. We are in the central south so much drier.

When I went to Lengerich I had to ride through two days of liquid sunshine. Another two days when I rode to Walschbronn last year and half a day when we rode back from the South of France. Perhaps the rain gods just choose the TR1 Rally!! I will find out when I ride to Austria in August. I hope to see you there.

Regards

Kevin, according to George Bernhard Shaw "liquid sunlight" is whisky...

Afair all of the 3 rallies that took place in Walschbronn were rainy. In Bavaria / Rossbach we had more luck most of the time but i dont know if this applies also to austria... Wink

As you seem to know the queen, will she come to the 2019 rally?

Hello

George Bernard Shaw must be right!

I will ask the Queen if she will attend. I am sure that if its a choice of meeting Donald Trump or coming to our rally, she will come to our rally. No promises though.

Hi Kevin,

if you organize it, Natascha and me will be glad to come. I haven`t been to the UK for 4 years by now. So it`s time to go there again. This time by bike.

We should try to organize a Group of people riding there together. Maybe we can get the ferry tickets cheaper that way.

Hope to see you in Austria.

Hallo Kevin,

Hello Tim & Martina

I would be nice to see you here.

I have done a little research and to obtain a group discount on Channel Tunnel you would require 15 vehicles or more. Brittany ferries is minimum of ten vehicles and Dover/Calais is a minimum of ten vehicles.

I believe Willi and Sepp have traveled to the UK on a number of occasions perhaps they can advise on best routes and lowest prices?

All the best and I look forward to seeing you in the UK in 2019.

Hallo Martina,

Hello All

When I rode to the north of Germany it took me two days and I stayed overnight in Belgium.

If you ride down to the channel ports you can take the Tunnel or Ferry. The Ferry is the lowest cost and you get to relax for an hour or so on the ferry. I prefer the tunnel as its quicker and only takes 30 minutes for the crossing.

There is another alternative, You can take a ferry from the Hook of Holland to Harwich. It is a longer sea journey but the ferry runs overnight. So less miles to ride and you can overnight on the ferry. I haven't taken that route for may years so don't know what the cost is.

I look forward to seeing you in the UK next year.

Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
it's a really great idea to take the rally on the island Thumb Up
My wife told me to make plans for our family holidays next year in france... So we are going to stay in the Normandie....and I'm next to the ferry Le Havre - Portsmouth... Wink  of course, we're coming. It's a pleasure to meet you in your hometown!
See you,

Hello Christian

Great plan. When you get to Portsmouth you are only an hour from where I live.

I look forward to seeing you again at the rally.

Just a thought though, how are you going to get the wife and kids on the back of the bike?   Grin

All the best

I've noticed some apprehension about riding/driving on the 'wrong' side, so coming over in a group would be a good idea from a safety and confidence point of view - probably a better reason even than saving money... Those with more confidence and experience of using the right side (which is left, of course) could lead...

Smiley Cool

Keith,
these apprehensions driving on "the other side" , it´s more or less a joke, Riders from GB have the same Problem on the Continent. You get used to it quick. Especially when you overtake and use both sides of the street. Only Roundabouts are funny,

I once drove on a german highway on the right lane, when another car slowly pully along me. when i looked over i could see a person on the left seat of the car, which was obviously asleep (or maybe dead?). "help, a ghost car" i thought and lifted the gas and let the car pull away and then i saw that it was a british car. The driver on the right sead was awake and had been covered by the B-pillar of the car in the moment i looked...

I have no doubt - it's a fact that most riders from the continent are good riders - in lane discipline particularly. Roundabouts? Most Brits haven't got a clue... (I'm a professional driver and it pains me to have to observe their antics every single day - motorcyclists too)

Hello All

As you may be aware the UK are in the process of the leaving the EU. Or, they may not! Despite what the politicians are doing I am planning to host a rally.

So. I have checked and the current situation is that, if you are an EU citizen, you can travel into the UK using a EU identity card or a Passport. You can also ride in the UK using your European driving license and do not require an international driving license. I will monitor this closely and if the situation changes I will let you know.

I have arranged camping in our village close to the village hall. If anyone requires rooms, B&B (bed & breakfast) or hotel rooms please let me know and I will do my best to arrange those for you. My email address is: kdemery@btinternet.com

I look forward to seeing you all in August.

Regards
Kevin

Good morning TR1 riders.

After failing to find a TR1 within my budget I have bought a BT1100 Bulldog. I am wondering if this successor would be welcome at the rally this August in the UK? I would like to come and meet you all and see your bikes. I drove many brilliant kilometres in Canada on my XV920RH.

What do you think?

Hello Kevin,

now I am also making plans to visit the rally in august. It will be my first visit to a TR1 rally at all.

The travel distance from my home town (close to the dutch and belgian border) is about 600 km and should be possible as a day trip.
I prefer the channel tunnel at a rate about 90 EUR for a return ticket. Hopefully the customs are not getting to serious after the Brexit....
Keep fingers crossed.....

Kind regards

Ralf

Hello Ralph

I look forward to seeing you at the Rally. There will probably be a few more riders coming over from Holland/Belgium.

I have done the journey from the Dutch/Belgium border in a day. It's not too strenuous. Lots of motorway on the UK side. It will get you here quicker.

If you turn up early you can often take an early train on the Tunnel at little or no cost.

Travel safely.

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

what do you mean by early and what does little or no cost mean?

Having gone to the UK by motorbike several times before I always used the ferries from Calais, basically because this seemed to be the cheapest way to get there.

So I´m quite surprised to hear that is obviously no longer the case. Could you give us some more details and your expirience on that?

I booked the Qudos in Salisbury for to nights for Natascha an me. Is there public transpartation or are there taxis in Salisbury?

We both are looking forward to see you in August.

Cheers

Hello Tim

I hope you are well?

I have turned up three days early for the Channel Tunnel and they have charged me £20. On another occasion I turned up a day early and it cost me nothing. On the last occasion I turned up two hours early and they wanted to charge me £80. So, it varies. It just indicates that you are not locked into a fixed time and sometimes there is a low cost option for arriving early.

The Cross Channel ferries are always cheaper than the Chunnel. I have just done a price comparison and for a specific time and date it would cost me £65 on the Channel Tunnel and £50 on the PO ferry. I prefer the channel Tunnel because in my experience the loading time and transit time is much shorter. Well worth the difference in cost. However, if you want a two hour break in your journey and a chance to relax and have a meal then the ferry would be a better choice for you.

The Qudos hotel is right in the centre of Salisbury. From Pitton to your hotel is about 10kms. The public transport is awful as we are only a small village. Yes there are taxis. A motorcycling friend of mine is a taxi driver, I will let you have his number.

I look forward to seeing you and Natasha in August. Are you planning to go to Wales where you bought your bike from?

Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I would love to be able come to the rally. Alas I am unsure time and finances will allow me to get the Tr1 finished in time. I might consider coming on the Flying Anvil (XV750SE) if all else fails.

As I used to work some summer festivals in Wiltshire I'd probably use our old route, A272 then A303.

Cheers,

Hello Kevin,

I`m fine just a little busy on my job, thank you for asking.

I may try the tunnel this time.

I´m  actually considering going to Wales. Natascha prefers renting a house or a flat on or near the coast.

Unfortunately Tregaron is far off the coast. So we will propably spend a week in Cornwall after our rally.

Looking forward to see all of you in August.

Hello All

I have updated the Rally info. (Thank you Manfred.)

Note: We can only use the Rally field from Friday to Monday morning. So, if anyone is planning to come early or stay late I will need to book you into the local campsite. It is very close to the Rally field, 500m, so not far away.

I look forward to seeing you all in August.

Hello All

We are less than two months away from the Rally. Can you please let me know if you are going to come. I need to arrange food for everyone.

Also, as stated above I can only use the Village Green from mid-day Friday to mid-day Monday. If anyone wishes to arrive early or stay late then they cannot camp on the Green. I have arranged a block booking at our local campsite. It is only 500m from the Rally site. I would suggest you stay on the Village Green for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights but on the Campsite either side of those days. Any problems please contact me. kdemery@btinternet.com

The Campsite is called the White Hill Caravan Park. Let me know if you want to stay there and I will pre-book for you. There is a map below to show how close it is to the Rally Site.

The cost at the campsite is £10 per night for a small tent.

I look forward to seeing you in August.

Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Natascha and I planned to come to the rally. Momentarily I`m not really sure whether I can join you all or not.

This is because I quitted my Job at Postbank and start with at the VR Bank next monday. As you know we planned our holidays around the event. This will definetly not be possible, because I can not take two weeks off on the second month working.

Furthermore I had a problem with the bike returning from the Cafe Racer Meeting last sunday that i could not take care of so far. So I don`t know whether this issue is a major one or not.

I´m really sorry for this, but I hope you will understand.

kind regards
Tim

Hello Tim

That's a very poor excuse for not coming to the Rally! But seriously I do understand and hope you get your bike back together.

There is an alternative: You could take a flight to Heathrow and hire car to come to the Rally. Then I could lend you my bike for the weekend.

The offer is there for you if you would like to take it.

All the best.

Hello George

I look forward to seeing you all here and thank you for letting me know you are coming.

The reason why we cannot use the field on Thursday is because to use the Village Green I have to hire the Village Hall as well. It would have made the Rally cost too high. Especially as I did not know how many would arrive on Thursday or stay later.

All the best.

For those that need an address for their Satnav, the address for the Campsite is as follows:

White Hill Caravan Park, White Hill, Salisbury SP5 1DY.

The address for your satnav for the Rally ground is White Hill, Pitton, Salisbury SP5 1EB

It is always best to take the M25 is an clockwise (PLEASE NOTE CORRECTION) direction from the Channel ports to Pitton. Also, avoid the M25 at peak periods. It is 80 miles long but at peak periods it is the biggest queue in the UK.

Last, remember to RIDE ON THE LEFT.

All the best
Kevin

Hello Ali

We are a small country by the time you get up to top speed you will be at Lands End and in the sea.

But seriously be careful, this is not Germany we have a 112 kph national speed limit. By all means overtake, just don't get caught.

I look forward to seeing you at the Rally.

Hello Freddie

I am pleased to hear you are coming. The rally wouldn't be the same without you. Sorry you couldn't bring the Cappucino - Roadster. It is the best engineered TR1 I have seen, in my humble opinion.

As you are arriving Thursday you will need to stay in the local campsite Thursday evening. It is only 500m from the Rally site. The details of how to get there are in the forum.

Regards
Kevin

Hello Steve

It's good to hear from you.

I think the best option would be get to the Rally site early and then come with us for the ride out. Second best option would be to meet us at our lunchtime rendezvous and ride back to the Rally site with us.

Let me know what works for you and I will let you have more details.

Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
My plan this year is:
on end of July visiting Herbert, then, on first of August there is a "Grand Prix de Baguette", a 3- Hour Endurance for old Bikes in Chambley, a race-track near Metz/France. By coincidence an aquainted person, Volker  needs a Partner for his Team, he  asked me and i agreed to help.  My job is to go  three turns of half an hour with my bike. So, as last year, i will combine the rally, a bit of race-track and vacation in south france. In fact, first Walschbronn, then Chambley, Walschbronn again, a little round trip via Jura, Sea alpes, valley de drome, auvergne, back to Walschbronn and heading to Pitton.

Hello

Ali - your trip sounds fantastic. I am envious. I look forward to seeing you in Pitton. Don't drop your bike on the track, I would hate to see you arrive with a few dents.

Steve - Yes we will stop off mid-day at Sammy's and have lunch there as well. Hope to see you there.

Less than three weeks to go!!

Hallo Gemeinde,

Volker

Hallo Volker,

Werner

I'm still hopeful. I've acquired riding gear for my daughter. I have all the parts (thanks Kevin), I have the tools now that my new torque wrench has arrived. I'll clear my garage up so there's space around the bike and then I'm going to enter (for me) uncharted territory and have a go at replacing the front head gasket. Then there's the newly discovered oil leak from the filter cover (standard TR1 missing corner), my exhaust to firm up and an MOT to pass. What could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a few things, actually. But if all goes to plan, we'll be there.

Hello Keith

If you lived closer I would come and help. Sorry.

I have had to do this a few times myself. I seem to remember:

Set the timing first, that is front cylinder on TDC
Block up the engine
Remove the front wheel
Remove the chain, you will need to drive out the soft link. You can reuse it.
Remove the carbs
Disconnect all electrics and bolts securing engine to the frame.
Then use the front forks to lift the bike off the engine and roll the bike back back.

Best to get a friend to help.

Best of luck.

Kevin

Hello George

No problem at all. I will do that.

There is another group that are going on to the Isle of Man. They will probably stay until Wednesday so you will not be alone.

I can show you the local area if you wish.

There are just a few riders remaining who will leave tomorrow for the Isle of Man.

It was good to see you again Tim & Natasha. Thank you for making the effort and coming to the Rally.

Full report, photos and videos to follow.

I look forward to seeing you all in Italy next year.

Arrived home safely. Ali went this morning from Walschbronn. Kevin you and your crew did a great job. I know how much effort it was, but when you saw how everybody enjoyed the meeting it must have been a good satisfaction for you.
Greetings to Mary and all the nice villagers you have there and again thank you so much.
Hopefully see you soon.

Herbert from Walschbronn

It was a real great time in Pitton! Tom and I enjoyed it completely. We'd also arrived safetly on monday. Tanks for your full organisation, especially to your "Village volunteers"! Thumb Up Tom was very impressed about the whole meeting and the nice group we all had been during the rally.
We'll come back to see your area once again. I'm going to send you some photos today.
Best wishes to you and Mary, Christian

At first, Kevin, many thanks for the 2019 Rally in Pitton on behalf of my TR 1 and me.
Nearly 3.5  weeks of vacation is over, i am home again.
Starting at end of July, i had a great time in Walschbronn, at Herberts place. We  drove to Chambley, a Race track near Metz. I had a 3 hour Endurance race there with Volker on his Ducati,  and Herbert as our "Pit Girl", in serious his important Job was to show when the one who is driving  had to finish his turn/come to the Box and to change transponders very quickly. After that experience i drove to the Jura, near lake Geneve, and to the Vercour near Crest. A Stop in the Auvergne was nice, on the trip to Alsace it was raining cats and dogs, so my Mobil phone quit the  Job . But it was a cheap one, and the TR was doing the job witout modern electronics. A day in Walschbronn to rest and for a little maintenance was nice, and Off Herbert and me went to Dieppe/Newcastle for a nighttrip with the ferry. Arriving in Newcastle at 4 Am in the morning, an english breakfast at Brighton Seaside was just right.
We met Willi, Doris, Freddy , Bergmann Bobby , Dieter with Son Willi on the local campground on Thursday morning.
And i had a great time in Pitton, many thanks for that. Especially rainy Friday was great, everybody together underneath the Tent at the Bar.
Sammy Millers Place was marvellous.
Herbert and me left at Monday morning, took the ferry to Dieppe and arrived at Walschbronn at Tuesday.
I went to my home at Thursday then, 650 KM Country roads,  sunny weather, no technical problems, only a bit of Oil consumption, my tires - Conti Road attack 3- did a great job at more than 6000 Km, including the turns on a race track,
Regards Ali

Hi,

we finally arrived in Amersfoort in the Netherlands yesterday at 10:30 pm, so Pitton is now safe again from Krauts and Cheeseheads. After the rally we stayed another 9 days on the campground in pitton, despite the fact that is was not too clean... Wink We visited a few places such as Bath, Avebury and the south coast, did a few walks in the New Forest and the tower tour in the cathedral of Salisbury. Very impressing. Thanks to Kevin for guiding us to Avebury with his Vincent and for the supper.

And of course thanks to Kevin and all the friendly people from Pitton for organizing the rally and thanks to the staff from the Silver Plough.

Gruss,
Schorsch
