Con rod confusion
12.06.21 at 14:47:50

Hi All, I’m hoping that someone may be able to help with the following please.
I have a 1981 chain drive 981cc TR1 and I’m currently rebuilding the engine. I’ve been advised that the left con rod (part no.5A8-Y1166-00) is heat damaged and in need of replacing.  I managed to source part no. 5A8-11660-00 which appears to be a later replacement.  It’s my understanding that this part was subsequently replaced by 5A8-11650-00, which I was unable to find.  It appears that the later bikes run with two 5A8-11650-00 con rods instead of one 5A8-11650-00 and one 5A8-11660-00 or one 5A8-Y1165-00 and one 5A8-Y1166-00…  If that makes sense.
The problem is that part no.5A8-Y1166-00 has two oil holes and 5A8-11660-00 has only one.  Obviously I’ll need a different bearing but my question is whether there’s a potential issue running with only one oil hole.  Are the two holes necessary?

Hi Jase,
i try to explain,
The conrod for the front has one oil hole, for the back there are two holes, bearings for front and rear are different and available, those for XV1100 or BT 1100 are the same.
Of course you can use a Conrod with two holes at the front, the second hole will be closed by the front bearing and without function  if you have the correct bearing for the front. I would recommend to use a a Conrod with two holes at the rear Cylinder- with the correct bearing, it has a special groove , just look at it and you will see what i mean. Yamaha did it  to have more cooling at the rear piston-bottom, and in my opinion that makes sense.
If you cant get a rod with two holes you can drill one,
Ali

Evening Ali, thanks for the reply.  I’ve done a little more research and it appears that it’s part no.5A8-11650-00 that has two holes and not 5A8-11660-00 which only has one.  Curiously the older part no.5A8-Y1165-00 has one hole whilst 5A8-Y1166-00 has two, which is totally illogical, but I should have known better.  I ordered a second hand 11650 from America shortly after posting my question, which should hopefully resolve the issue.  To be honest I was never happy with the idea of using only one hole to cool the rear cylinder, but thought I’d ask the question in the vain hope of avoiding the inevitable.

Hi All,  Logic dictates that there’s an ever decreasing number of nutters with an interest in the conrods from the 1981 yamaha TR1, but on the off chance that I may be of any help I’ve decided to follow up my last post.  I now know for a fact that 5A8-Y1165-00 is the rod with two holes and that I was previously mistaken.  It would appear that the parts catalogue for the 1981 & 1982 years has them numbered incorrectly and it's this that caused my earlier confusion.  This seems to be supported by the 1986 XV1000 parts catalogue which shows them the other way around...  Something to bear in mind when you're trying to find a replacement.  Hope this helps.
