Ticking noice in engine

I have had an annoying ticking sound on my -81 TR1 since i bought a year
ago. The noice has really taken the fun out of driving the MC.
The sound has been related to loading of the engine and could be
suspected to be from piston slap or ring noice.
But the real reason (and the one my wallet hoped for) was that the
fuelvalves which are vacuum controlled where ticking. I also had a
little leakage on the intake side.
The reason for the tick may also be worm O-rings in the valves that lets
metal hit metal.
Regards Frederick

Hi Frederic
regarding your annoying ticking sound:
--probably just the valve clearance too big.
piston slap is not ticking but more hammering sound
ring noice.
--???
But the real reason (and the one my wallet hoped for) was that the
fuelvalves which are vacuum controlled where ticking.
--you wouldn't hear that
I also had a little leakage on the intake side.
--normal
The reason for the tick may also be worm O-rings in the valves
that lets metal hit metal.
--No
these o-rings do not impede the valve touching its seat!! if so your valve would burn!
I Have two advices
1. try adjusting the valve clearance:https://www.tr1.de/tr1/tech_info/page2e.htm
2. wear a soundproof helmet
cheers,
Klaus

Actually the problems is the fuelvalve.
A person on the yamaha tripple list has had the same problem.
The noice (when it is there)goes away if I remove the vacuumtube
that is connected to the fuelvalve.
I discovered it when i adjusted the valves and deliberately
did not reconnect the vauum to the fuelvalves.

(PS i live in Sweden but family stems from Scotland. If you go back
to pre 1066 my ancestors lived in France but where Vicings.
So I guess we are back where we started)

Hi Frederic!
funny thing that ticking!
i just had a similar problem but it was clearly the front cylinder Valves
after adjustment the noise is gone..
I couldn't image that you might hear sth as small as a fuel valve ticking
in all that racket!!!
anyways..
give me a mail once you pass Karlsruhe on your way down south
cheers,
Klaus

I would know if it is possible to have, in some way, the technical draving
of the YAMAHA TR1 engine (only the assembly, not all the particulars !!!!).
I am an engineerimg student and I would like to design a chassis motorized
with the YAMAHA TR1 engine; this is possible only if I have the technical
drawing.
Tank you, very much.
