I have a 1981 TR1 imported to the UK from Japan in 1991. It has a 748 cc engine.
I can get 1-N-2 gears but not 3 and onwards. When I operate the lever by hand it seems to work OK but doesn't return to center after a change which I guess when riding causes the problem.
Any ideas?
I am planning to replace the shift shaft and associated springs first of all.

Probably the shift forks(s) is bent. Just to be safe you can try and put in fresh oil (20W/40) and see if the box gets any better. Anyhow; when you dismantle the engine you´ll se what´s the matter!
Regards Lars (owner of a Tr1. 1981 998 cc)

I've just been on a longer run and managed to change up through all gears.
This was done by pushing the shifter down with the clutch out and then pulling it in and changing up. A spring? that should centre the shifter in between changes.

Hi,
i believe that the spring that moves the lever back into the middle position after shifting up or down is broken.
Bye,
Georg
